Hi rifle john here my first rifle was a savage 99 E model i mail order in 1967.It was a plain jane,.243.It was trade off years ago for i what i donot rember. I have alway had a soft spot in my heart for 99;s .Thru the years i have own two other 99 one a 99a 250-3000 that was made in the 1950;s it was a jewell but a bull barrel 700 came along and the 250-3000 was gone. My most resent 99 is and A model 24inch tube, 30-30 made in 1917 it has a great bore and iam work on a load with RCBS 30-150 cowboy,if anyone can help it would be apprecated.Back to the 99 to me it a shame that the great old rifle does not get the respect it should. It was made for almost a 100 years if my math serve me.I have alway wonder if Bill Ruger did;nt get the idea for the 10-22 mag from the 99 rotray mag.Just the though,s of a 62 year old gun nutttttttttttttt .thanks riflejohn

Who ever said they get no respect???????????????????????? They command a premium price on the used gun market and at gun shows and many lament the fact that Savage discontinued them. (Which in my opinion was a dumb idea) They were always considered the Cadillac of lever guns (With the exception of maybe the Winchester Model 71) They also cost more money than the Winchester 94 or the Marlin 336 which may have been a factor in why 94s and 336s were more common with the average hunter that carried a lever gun.

Had one in .250-3000 that was my Grandfathers. Story was that my uncle Duce wanted a 3/8" hole in a piece steel. Ask my Grandfather to drill it. He set it down range about 75 Yds. and put that hole right where it was needed with that 99. As with many things, it got away from me years back. Looking to get another one maybe......<><Duce53

My first deer rifle was a 99. I believe from the 20's era. 303 Savage, still love it, still use it. No game has run away from it!

I've spent the past year and about 600 rounds experimenting with
a RCBS 30-150 CM' plain base. 1971 Winnie 94. This rifle does not
like Unique. Bullet around 15 BNH, best load, 18 gr. H4859. Best
group 1 inch, 50 yards, open sights, 72 year old eyes.

It's sought after around here, plenty of respect. Mine's a 1940 vintage, 300 Savage cal.

Mine, in 300 Savage, is the rifle I most often carry when I go hunting. At the range, other shooters check it out and say they'd like to have one. If you can find one for sale in this neck of the woods, be prepared to pay dearly.

I must admit I've seldom given it a second thought until recent years. I prefer to looks of the Winchester and even the Marlin over the Savage but have finally come to appreciate the quality of a Savage. It may very well be my next levergun.

They're highly respected here. Very Highly,

My Uncle's only deer rifle was a .25-3000 with which he slew many many heavy Adirondack bucks. Personally I think they're beautiful and wish I had a few more

Probably a significant part of the reason you rarely read about the 99 in current shooting publications is they devote limited space to articles on "Classic" or "Historic" firearms. If the 99 were still being made, there would be articles on it (though probably not as many as Marlins or Winchester, cheaper and owned by many more people).

I like the Savage 99 - .250-3000, .300 and .308 so far (not likely to afford any of the rare ones).

the 99 is a fine rifle....mine is .308 and it is real easy to carry in the field....shoots cast and J's equally well. the only thing I never liked about the rifle was the creep in the trigger. One day I will have to learn how to take that trigger apart and fix the creep

I don't know what part of the woods you have been living in for the past 35 or so years but the 99 is a very sought after gun. They have several shooters that would lay down the cash if Savage were to start up production again.
The biggest reason that they will not is that the 99 rifle was very well made and it would require more production costs than the guns made today. It all comes down to the bottom dollar.
I still kick myself for not buying a 99 in 250-3000 for the asking price of $400. Biggest mistake I ever made.

Maybe it's just luck, but no other rifle I've ever owned "points" like my old 99. I hardly even need the sights.
