Does anyone have any data for SR 4759 and a 405 gr bullet? I keep finding references on this site and others saying it is a good choice in the old trapdoor, but can't find an actual grain listing for the load. And I want to use some of all that surplus powder. :-D

For what it's worth... I have one of the free reloading data booklets passed out years ago before Hodgdon gobbled up all the powder companies. It shows a load for the .45-70: 29 grains of SR4759, giving 1500 fps at 26,900 CPU. That is all the information I have. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it in my Marlin (after starting at about 25 grains and working up); if you have a weaker gun, you might want to start at about 20 grains. The load they show for IMR 4227 is 30 grains, 1465 fps, 26,500 CUP. They only show maximum loads in this book. I used to use 25 grains of IMR 4227 in my Marlin with no problems.

jonk,

My standard load in the .45-70 with the 405 grain bullets is 25 grains of SR-4759. Velocity is 1350 to 1400 fps. I use the same powder under a 325 grain bullet, also.
