I looked at the Lee website for a mol for 270 win - no mold or sizer there. Do 270 win shooters not shoot cast?

You assume because Lee doesn't make a .270 mold that nobody casts for the .270 Winchester... yet you claim to be a caster since '66? :groner:

bought my first 270 last month.
I have never looked for a 270 mold before.
I assumed that the 270 being so popular Lee would make a bullet and sizer.
That surprised me that they do not.

They don't make a 6.5 Swede mould, neither.

I have an old 2 cavity Ideal 134gr RN mold I use in my 6.8SPC. Yea, gas checks can be hard to find and I had to have Buckshot make me a push through sizer for it.

I was just very surprised that with the 270 being popular that Lee would not have at least one mold for it...

My Rem. 700 shoots the Saeco 270 very well:http://photos.gunloads.com/images/CalamityJake/castinthe270.jpg

I have Hornady 270 gas checks for sale if you want some.

I can't swear this is true in every case, but I have always found .270 and 7mm gas checks to be interchangeable. Maybe I should say that .270 checks will work on any 7mm bullet I have used. I second the recommendation of the SAECO .270 bullet.

I will be looking for a mold at the gunshow this weekend
and may be making up a sizer to 0.280 or 0.278...

I’ve been shooting the 270 Winchester for a dozen years or so…

Both groups shown in pics are shot at 100 yards for a Model 700 Remington that I won at a gun raffle—it has never shot anything but cast…

The 3-shot group was shot with 21.0 grains of 5744 and the boolit was a 287346 (135 grains) sized down to 0.278”

The 10-shout group was shot with 20 grains of 5744 and the boolit was a 280642 (150 grains) sized to 0.278”…

Velocity for both loads is in the 1800 fps area. I never got great accuracy with higher velocities…

So, if you can’t get 0.277 caliber molds, the 0.284 caliber molds can be an option…

Good-luck…BCB

They quit some years ago, I've got the C277-125R and they used to make a 110 gr version too.

RCBS makes the 27-130 in both a standard round nose and a special FN although there seem to be more FPs than RNs . I've the 27-130 FN that i paper patch for my 7mm's .

I would think a fellow could size 285s to 278-280 w/o issue its only .007 inches.

I will also 2nd Buckshot for the NON-standard sizers. he did 2 for me , a 3165 and a 301. Both hit dead on , and they are way prettier than Lee's.

I can make .270 aluminum checks, they take a different thickness than 7mm but the same tooling, if someone could give me a shank diameter I will make em for 18/K shipped.

Drop me a PM if interested.

Lee have previously made .270 molds, I had one:
67953
A friend now has this. It was a single cavity, NIB covered in dust, found on the back shelf of LGS. $AUD30.

I recently have had interest in casting for .270win. A thread came up in group buy discussion but interest waned quickly. Found the below mold via google search last week, sold out since. Seems like a decent design. $100+ investment if you don't have mold handles for rcbs molds or want to modify lee handles. That's the downside.

I shot a bunch today and had a blast. I actually like the slow plinkers better for most shooting.

Lyman doesn't make 270 moulds currently, but they sure used to.
Keep an eye open at that gun show for a used one.
I have a 280642 which shoots pretty good in my 700 ADL.
Also keep an eye open for a 280411, 280412 or a 280473.
As mentioned above, RCBS makes a 130 grain mould 27-130-FN.
They also make a 150 grain mould, 270-150-SP.
Lyman and RCBS both make sizing dies in .277 and .278.
A split dowel and some crocus cloth can open up a 278 to 279 pretty quick if slugging your gun dictates the need.

BTW, Midway has Hornady 270 gas checks in stock right now.

Spent the morning at a gun show. It took over 1.5 hours to drive 70 miles through freezing, blowing snow - saw one accident, several vehicles in the ditch.
Got to the show.

NOT one 270 mold in the entire show. About 40 molds spread out on various tables all in either 30 cal, or 45 cal or 38 cal.
No H.I. dies either, in fact there was very little in the way of casting stuff.
The dealers I asked about 270 molds asked me why I wanted to shoot cast bullets when their ammo was so cheap.

on to fleabay unless there is one in group buy section...

10x...

As I mentioned and some other poster, don't forget you do have the option to use 0.284" molds also...

They will size down nicely and get you shooting that 270 Winchester...

Maybe an inexpensive Lee mold to begin with...

Just a thought...

Good-luck...BCB

I never got the Lyman 7mm x 150 grain Loverin to shoot to well in my 270 win. But I never tried to run it slower than 1950 fps. A little Unique under an old Lyman 122 grain Loverin for a bit over 1800 fps is my easy to get shooting load.
Also have the RCBS 150gr SP. Good bullet with high BC but you have to have good nose to bore fit.
Mine fits fine and shoots good but I like the little 122 grain Loverin. Can't get the 270 to shoot accurate over 1900 fps and I can get that with Unique instead of twice as much rifle powder so I just use the shotgun powder. Lower noise and barrel heat too. About the same with my 243's.

That is curious. I have never had a loverin bullet that did not shoot well.
I have discovered that alloy and hardness dictates a "speed limit" on my bullets. Untreated wheel weight will shoot very well up to 1800 fps or so in most guns.
Loverin style bullets can be driven a bit faster using the same alloy before accuracy starts to fall off. I have a batch of type metal that gives a really hard but light bullet.
The harder bullets from this alloy can be driven much faster than W.W. alloy. But they are much lighter bullets as well.
Also the more a bullet is sized down the less likely it is to give a small group.

Not graved in stone but some trends I have noticed over the years...
