I have quite a few BP cap and ball revolvers, antiques and repros. On several I use the vegetable spray PAM as a lube. Some revolvers love the stuff, others don't. It works well on Remingtons and Colt Patersons that don't have grease grooves on the cylinder pin, but not so well on the Ruger Old Army.
Anyways, I tried it in my Vetterli .41 and it actually works great. I lube the bullets with homemade lube, but at the range, after each shot, I gave a puff from the spray can into the chamber (actually not the original PAM but the store's cheaper version). I followed each puff with a dry patch and it was amazing how clean the barrel stayed. The puff from the can also cleared the smoke from the barrel. I sprayed the PAM down the barrel, then tipped the rifle down and watched the PAM dredge the junk out. I think a funnel of some kind to direct the spray right into the chamber would work better.
Anyways, it works and smells like burnt popcorn.
