I tinkered with some 300 grain lee's in my rugers last weekend, but did not put them on paper. I shot them as cast (.454 ish) lla lubed and aircooled over 10 of unique. No leading and was hitting 8 inch steel and exploding milk jugs from 25 to 100 yards with essentially the same hold. For non full bore 1250 fps linebaugh level loads, is there a reason I am missing to install the check? a 300 grain flat nose at 950 fps will punish anything in my corner of texas!

Based on your description, no.

thats what I thought as well. I was wondering if at moderate pressures the first band slightly oversized as it is at .454 would seal the gas well and function as a base. Maybe its a bit of a boattail? ; ). I'll load some more and put them on paper. Saving the big gas checks for boomer loads would be nice.
thanks

I've learned that wondering such things and merely soliciting the advice of an anonymous internet yields nothing but claims from false scientists and engineers who lack not only experience but the knowledge of how to measure the required factors to come to a true answer.

In short, when I find something that works, I spend less time questioning why, and more time enjoying the results.

fair enough and great point! If it works why wonder!
Thanks,

Naked gas-check boolits almost always shoot larger groups than thay do with their pants on, but not so much that thay are useless. I shot a great many RCBS 38-162 SWC and Lyman 429-244 boolits That way and they worked just fine for plinker/trainer boolits. If you put a scope on it and shoot it from a bench, you'll see a difference, but off hand with iron sights, you have to be pretty good before it becomes a problem.

i shoot mihecs 433-300 without gaschecks 18.6grns imr4227 win primers sized .430 and they shoot very well.I can keep 5 rounds in a snuff can lid at 30 paces. Works really well on ohio whitetails

That's the way I shoot them, in front of 22gr of H110/W296 in my 7 1/2" NMBH at about 1,200.
