Assuming that I can have only ONE mold for a Savage 170 (pump 30-30) that I am going to squirrel away until the gun is bequeathed to me - what would it be?

Oh, and Ditto for .45-70...

I've heard and read much about the Lee "soupcan" 113gr boolit. Centex Bill is letting me borrow his over the weekend. I should be able to fling a few on Sunday or Monday weather permitting. I'll let you know how they fly. Later.:castmine:

311041 for the 30-30.

Have to know what rifle the 45-70 is for as the load level and OAL of the loaded cartridge effect the choice.

Looking at the Lyman pics, I was wondering if that 311041/31141 wouldn't make the most sense.

A Stainless Takedown Marlin Guide Gun is next on my list to buy.

311041 for all purpose.

The 311291 also shoots very well for me but the round nose may present a problem for hunting and tube magazines. YMMV.

I guess I'm looking for a 311041 SC then. Too bad I missed out on Madcaster's last purge. (A couple of other articles I just found agree - and add an HP for varmenting...)

45 2.1: why the 292gr 191 over the 405 193?

Only 1 30 cal. mould? Take 2 lyman catalogs and one saeco and go study some. You should at least get your choices down to a 110-120 gr, 150 gr, 170 gr and 180-210 gr before studing nose profiles. Gianni

+1 for 311041. Or if you want a 150 the RCBS 30-150-FN. Either are standards to which other can be measured.

Past that, it's a crap shoot. But only ONE mould? How boring (pun intended).

The Lee C309-170-F seems to me to be pretty much a clone of 311041. It is the only GC bullet I use for 30-30 because I refuse to lap the nose of my 311291 to fit the 30-30's oddball bore, and the 311291 seems to perform miserably with a loose nose-to-bore fit.

I suggest taking a look at a single cavity Lee C309-170-F, which is cheap and readily available.

311041 and 457193 are sure winners here at casa de pumpguy.:Fire: :castmine:

For the 30/30: Lyman 311041 or RCBS 30-180-FN. The RCBS is a little heavier.

I'd go RCBS 180 fn then 31141 in that order even knowing 150 grain bullets kill whitetails well. Gianni.

Got to be 30-150-FN. Best all purpose bullet in the .30/30s. The 30-180-FN, the 311291 and 311041 are all a bit heavy.

The 30-150-FN is like baby bears soup....just right. IMHO...../beagle

RCBS 30-180FN or 311041. Either way have a 2 cav and get Bucksnort to HP one.

I like the Lyman 173 grain Flat nose GC mould. I have 2 since I like them so well.
I had one converted to work on a master caster. (I don't know the number offhand) I use then with checks for hunting, and without for lower velocity plinkin'
I had a similar mould that was a 150 gr. but it wasn't as effective on the Deer. with the 173 i've never had to track one.

Only one, because I don't have a .30-30 right now and am not planning on getting one soon, but am "expecting" to get my uncle's Savage 170 in 5-10 years. I'm really more of a .357 guy, so any use of the .30-30 would be where & when I needed a little more "stretch" than my .357 will give with max loads.

one 30-30 is like having ONLY one girl friend! But IF you are going to hunt deer with it the 311041 or RCBS 180 fn would serve better than the 150 grain for those "distant " deer. MY opinion only!
