I am in search of a load for a 45 Colt with 265 gr. GC lead bullets. I have Bullseye, Unique, Power Pistol, AA 5 &7, Universal, & Blue Dot.

It's for a Governor and a Judge.

Thanks in advance.

I would go with a max of 9 grains of Unique. Probably right around SAAMI spec or slightly higher. Alliant lists max of 9.5 grains of Unique for standard pressure 255 grain SWC.

8-8.5 Unique shoots pretty well in RBH 7,5" w/a Lee 452-255RNFP and a Lee 452-252 SWC that actual drop at 265 and 262.

I have loaded up to 13.0 grains Hercules Blue Dot, standard primers (Fed 150), and a 265 WFNGC bullet for a 3-3/4" barreled Ruger Montado revolver for about 1000 fps. You may want to start around 10 grains BD for your Judge/Governor revolvers and work up from there if needed.

I started my loads with this bullet based on data in Speer 14 wherein they list 13.0 grains as a max load with their 260 grain jhp. I started at 11.0 grains BD and worked up from there. I consider 13.0 grains as a max load in my gun, suitable for black bear and 2-legged varmints alike when I am alone on a remote trout and steelhead stream. For general use I'll probably drop that charge to 12.0 - 12.5 grains.
