View Full Version : Someone has a 22 that doesn't shoot so good

The club President and I were inspecting the target frames today, trying to determine what needs attention on our fix & cleanup day next Saturday.
At the 100 yd. targets I found 2, 22 rimfire, bullets sticking in the plywood backer. Nothing real noteworthy about that except that the first one I saw got the reaction of "What is that round thing sticking out of the plywood?"
"That" turned out to be a bullet that had gone in backwards, just enough of the nose protruding to let me get onto it with my Leatherman to pull it out.
The second one was about a foot away and imbedded sideways. It came out with just fingernail effort.
It would be nice to know the story behind them but I suspect somebody has a really doggy shooting 22.

Maybe shooting at a target/can/plastic bottle on the frozen ground and they are ricochets.

I thought about that as well. The one that was sideways has a couple dings that look like hits from other bullets after it got stuck but but they are both nice little arcs nipped out of the shape of the bullet, not a smear that would come from hitting something along the way. The one that was backwards has nary a mark on it so I'm quite sure it went in clean.

Somebody reamed out a .22 short barrel for .22LR?

I once had an old Stevens pump 22 that the barrel was so bad you could hear the bullet flipping through the air when shot. It was gotten in a trade when I was a teenager. I cut it down and made a "Mare's Leg" complete with holster. Still didn't shoot for beans, but was way cool. I traded it for a good 22 rifle.

Could have been a weakly charged round. I know 22's out of derringers keyhole. But, I doubt you would be finding them at the 100 yd range!

Wieght the bullets if possible They may be the 60 grn sss from aglia they key hole from alot of 22 rifles. The load is a 22 shortcase with the 60 grn bullet making it a long rifle. From what I have seen the 60 grn heel seated bullet is long for most rimfires rifling rate.

Could be a "ZIP" gun, barrel made from from a piece of car antenna or tubing. Only thing for sure is something will come out the end when it goes off, which end is also a problem. I won't go into my misspent youth, where I learned about such things.

I had a 22 mag that had incredible muzzle wear from careless cleaning with a hard rod. Keyholed at 20 yards. Used a brownells muzzle facing tool and brought it back to shooting well.

Don't know the layout of your range but at our range we see that sort of thing all the time. After rounds pass through a 25 or 50 yard target it might hit someones 100 yard target from two or three benches away.

I was thinking the CB caps or CB longs , a lot of fun to watch them drop into a target at 50 or more yards .

I cleaned a 22 for a neighbor recently. I don't know how a boolit could have gone down the barrel it was so caked in lead. This doesn't seem like a leading problem, tho.

bet it was from the reverse twist gain asperly series.
Were the bullets bigger? Could have been the SSS 60 grainers from Aguila. They are hit and miss on stability out of a normal twist 22 barrel. More miss than hit..

My first thought was the Aguila subsonics as well, but that big honkin' torpedo would have been obvious enough to mention in the OP.
My bet is it's a case of "floorboard crown".

Could be someone playing Rambo and just spitting out rounds as quickly as possible?
