View Full Version : A trip back in time

When I was in college in 1967, I saved what little money that I had and bought me an old model ( new when I bought it...wished I still had it! ! ), 3 Screw , Ruger .357 Mag. with a 6 1/2 " barrel.

Money was tight, to say the least , back during those days. I remember once I was able to buy the pistol, going to a hardware store to buy some Winchester 357 Magnums. The guy wanted $6.00 for the box ( which I didn't have....), so he sold me 12 rounds ( all the money I had at the moment ).

I said that day, that I'd save my money and start reloading so I would no longer have to buy factory ammo for my pistol. I kept that promise ! !

A yr. or so later, I had enough money saved ( how I did that now I don't know ? ? ) to buy a bullet mold for my pistol.

When trying to make a decision as to which design to order.... the selection was broad and wide then ( 1968-69 ), as I remember there were 3 times more molds available from Lyman as compared to today's offerings. There were so many offered, I found it all confusing and really didn't know which mold to buy ? ?

Back during this time period, I read everything I could get my hands on that was written by Skeeter Skelton . As you know, Skeeter thought that there wasn't a better bullet for a 38 Special or a 357 Magnum than the Lyman 358156. He thought that it was at its best in HP form. If it was good enough for Skeeter, it was good enough for me.

So I finally found a new HP Lyman 358156 bullet mold and ordered it. That mold has served me well during the past 40 or so years. I could shoot sub inch , 6 shots groups with that Ruger 357 magnum pistol with 14 grs. of 2400 with the 358156, gas checked, HP back in those days from sand bags at 25 yards.

Look at these photos , you can see the production date in the top left hand corner of the mold....this is an old one.......I can't see me ever selling this mold...it brings back many memories ! !

Still cast great bullets almost 40 yrs. later.......These are sized thru a Lee Push thru, nose 1st., .357 " with the gas check installed and are about to be pushed into an H & I die that is .358 " for lube. I'm shooting these out of a Model 627 , 5.5 inch now. They shoot GREAT ! !

I use a Minolta Dig. camera. It can deliver some pretty amazing photos. I finish gun stocks professionally and use my camera in my stock finishing work.

Here is a link to some of my stock finishing work if you'd like to see some photos:

Never having used one, it appears that keeping that hollow point mould hot enough is a problem for you...

Keeping the mold hot , using HOT alloy and working at a brisk pace is the secret to good bullets with few rejects using most any HP mold.

It's hard for me to choose between my 358156HP and the C358-180RF for shear usefulness...

I'd better check the date on mine, as it looks mighty similar to yours.

If that 180 shoots better than the 358156 HP, I guess I better try and get one...........

Now, tell me how you posted such large pictures within the limitations of this forum. They look great and I want to do some, too:-D

Ooopps , guess I may be in error here with photos that are too large....
I'll go back and edit mine right now...Sorry ! !

Catshooter:
How many have I cast from this mold? ? ....I have no records, if I were guessing, I'd say 10,000 - 15,000 over a near 40 yr. period. That's a rough " guess-ti-mate." ? ?

Ben;
I didn't mean to imply that you were doing ANYTHING wrong. However, I haven't been able to post a picture as large as yours. I wondered how you did it. I LIKE your pictures!!

Dale53 :

I shot my photos at 1280 pixel setting rather than the norm of 640 pixel. When I upload to photo-bucket.com, they are uploaded at 1280. When you click on the link to see the photo, it continues to be seen at the 1280 setting which shows a lot of detail on small macro objects, like s/n's , mold numbers, etc.

Hope this helps.....

Best,
Ben

Ben;
Thanks for the explanation. I have been posting direct and the forum's limitations are, u-m-m, limiting:roll: . This is NOT a forum bash - we only have a certain amount of band width and this is probably necessary to keep things working well, long term.

Mine doesn't have a date stamp, though it is stamped 631 instead of 231

You do know that Photobucket will automatically resize if you tell it to?

The even have an option specifically for Forums that will resize any "large" photo to 640x480. Nice feature.

Yes, you're right that is a good feature that they have. I really like Photobucket. I keep a lot of my photos there.

You might want to try to make a slideshow and send to a friend....neat program they have.

If I interpret that right, Ben isn't really posting photos here, he's basically posting a link to the photo at Photobucket. Is that right? That way there would be no limit to the size photo shared here?

That's my theory too, I don't want to " gobble up " bandwidth and create a hardship, so I figure it is better for the welfare our site if I post only a photo link , not the actual photo.
