I cast a tc bullet for my 38 that I shoot in CAS. I size it in a star to .358. My son shoots a 9mm and would like to
be able to shoot it a bit more. Can I run some of my bullets through the star (with the appropriate die) and size them
so he can use them? By the way I am pretty new to casting.

thanx

don't know if a star is 'special' but I can take my .358 dropped boolits down to .356 in my lyman 450 (or 4500 for that matter) with no problem. My S&W shield likes .356...

Hi and welcome to the forum. There is no such thing as a bad question when you need info or help. Around here someone will always answer you and try to help you out. It doesn't matter what brand of sizer or type of machine is used to size and lube the bullet, s long as the diameter is correct for obtaining good accuracy. If the gun likes the diameter and groups well then you are in business. Sometimes it takes some experimentation (and patience) to find the right combination ad that can be elusive. Be assured that all of us here were once new to every aspect of what is discussed here and many mistakes went into the experience that has been amassed. So keep practicing and asking questions. Good shooting. LLS

Have done it with my star on several occasions. The boolit has been lubed when you sized it 358 should go through a 356 die with no problem. Have also done them with a 356 die a lee sizing kit. Give it a try. I was doing this with 112 and 125 gr boolits.

If mould has a deep lube groove and the mould does not drop them too large than it shouldn't be a issue.

Uhh, I shoot 0.358" bullets in 9x19s without any sizing.
If you increase the lead content, you can cast a smaller diameter heavier bullet.

Not a dumb question at all. I had several teachers in high school that firmly believed the only dumb question was the one that wasn't asked.

You guys should slug the 9mm barrel, you may not need to size any smaller than you are now.

The more pertinent question for me is how heavy is the TC boolit you are shooting? Much easier to find data for a ~125 grain 9mm load than a ~158 grain.

Load one up sized for the 38 to make sure it chambers in the 9mm, if all is well it'll shoot. It should chamber just fine.

I shoot my .360 size 357 magnum bullets in a 380acp without any further sizing. A custom 120 grain mold from MM is one of the best shooters in the 380.

Like FR boxes from usps "If it fits, then ship it!!"
Agree with all comments about asking questions !!

My favorite teachers saying was "A destination is never reached if one does not begin"

Think of it like this ,this or any forum would never be if someone never asked a question???

& for info on loads contact IllinoisCoyoteHunter (spellin??) I know he shoots Lees 158 gr rnfp in the 9mm. Tell em GP100man sent ya , or uh - - -
maybe not , LOL!!

I regularly shoot .358 diameter 125 grain boolits in my 9mm. As long as they chamber, choot em!

Try the 358 size making up dummy loads and cycle them in the 9mm. You can always go to 357 or 356 if they will not cycle. My 9's are too tight for .358, I use .356 but others chamber and shoot 358 well so I am told.

I can use .357 in one of my 9mm's but a different one wants .356. Much depends on the firearm. As others have already said, give it a try. load one up and take the barrel out of the pistol and see if it fits. Of course you can slug it also.

i'd try a couple of dummy rounds at the 358 size before I done anything else.
but i'm lazy.
take your micrometer and measure the inside of one of his fired cases.
that will give you an idea of how big will chamber.

runfiverun: provided the brass is new and not work hardened. Hardened brass will spring back.
Personally I would like to see a 9x19 barrel chambered so tight it wouldn't take a 0.358" bullet. That chamber probably is not to SAAMI standard.
Too many people worship at the altar of "sizing" and don't take the step to learn.
One of my BHPs has a groove diameter of 0.359+" and sure won't shoot undersized lead bullets at all. However, with LLA, a 0.358-0.360" as-cast bullet shoots very well.

I use a lee 358-125-rf sized to .357 in many 9mm.
