What kind of powder or powders should one use on 45 auto 200 and 230 grain cast bullets. I will be using a LNLAP press. Pistol is a Kimber full size. I just got done with lube 45/45/10 and size of the 200 swc. Clean burning would be nice.

Anything on the shelf equal to or faster than Herco as indicated on the typical powder speed charts. ... felix

I should also mention i do have lots of different powder to use. I will see if i have a open jug of red dot i know i have new 8 pound keg think dad used it for shotgun shells. Looks like about anything will work depending what powder manual u pick up.

I use Clays because I have it and don't need it for anything else. Have also used Red Dot and HP38 both with good results.

Felix had the right answer, use a fast enough burn rate and it will work.

I think felix nailed this one, .45 ACP isn't real picky about which powder gets used.

I prefer to use W231 because it meters so well, but others work just fine.

I use Win 231 mostly in 45 ACP, I have also used Bullseye, unique, HP-38, red dot, ANd several others but 231 around 5 .0 grns with a 200 grn swc is my go to load. I use 231 in aalot of pistol rounds with good results..

I've tried many powders but I keep going back to my Red Dot loads.

6.0gr of WSF with either of those bullets is what I load in .45. Never had the need for anything else. Tried a lot of powder and that was the best for my needs.

I like Unique or Bullseye, load most with Unique as I like it and so do my Colts.

I've used Clays and Red Dot. Both work well. It seems the Clays is a little cleaner. As already mentioned several powders will work very well.

I have used blue dot, unique, and 700x. I like 700x the best because it seems to burn clean in my gun and I am getting good results with it with 230gr rn cast. I shoot USPSA and one of the RO's asked me what I was using because it smelled sweet to him. Never really noticed the smell until after that and it does have a different smell.

I was going to give you my input but everything I would have to say has already been said.

I've been using W231 for cast bullet loads for a couple decades, and it does everything I ask of it. I hear WST is the bomb for cast, but have yet to try it. I've got VV 3n37 and Universal waiting in the wings to try also.

I use Blue Dot for hi-vel loads in both jacketed and cast. I also like WSF, VV N340 and Power Pistol.

Mostly I use Bullseye, W231/HP38, or Accurate #5. All seem to work good. Accurate #2 is also a good fast powder.

I find this powder burn rate chart very useful. It goes "horizontal" for comparison between brands, and "vertical" for slow/fast rating.

I use mostly Bullseye in my 200 and 230 grain 45 acp loads, but I have used IMR 700x, and will try Green Dot (got 16 lbs cheap before the panic).

Many choices. Let your pistol tell you what it likes.

I used unique for everything, until I started casting. I found AA#5 to be less smokey and easier to get higher velocity. Also AA#5 works well in many other calibers, and meters very well.

ditto on the bullseye. it all I've ever used one cause I had lots of it. two because it is very consistent and accurate in all my .45's and lastly because the 1911 was developed by John Browning around a 229 lead bullet over 5 grains of bullseye and that's good enough for me. it is rather dirty but that just ensures I give them a good cleaning more often. any of the above mentioned powders would work well and many others. Read every loading manual you can get your hands on then read them again. keep copious notes on every load you cook up. Safety first and always.

For a cheap powder I like HP-38/231. For a better cleaner softer shooting version of that I really like N320.

Thanks for all the help. My lyman 44th edition says bullseye is the most accurate load so i'm going with it or red dot for now to see how the bullets shoot. This is my first time ever doing this without dad so i am having a hard time, it sucks when you don't have a walking manual on everything standing there. Tomorrow time to dig down to the press and see if i can get stuff set up. Thanks again guys.
