Been using a Lee soupcan in my 10" Contender 32-20 (30-20), and it shoots great as long as I use the GC, but without not so great. With the rising cost of GC's, and everything else for that matter, I'd like to try a plain base boolit, maybe even a little lighter. Anyone have a good suggestion?

Mine has a long throat, and likes 311041 and RCBS 165-sil with most any reasonable powder.

It's been a very long time since I had a Contender . I do remember though that mine liked the 311466 very much .

No experience with the lighter part, but the RCBS 150 CB does very well in my TC rifle at 100 yrds with WC 820.

I have the Saeco 322 but have not had a chance to try it out yet.

I have had better luck with bullets that are .312 - .313 in diameter, plain base or checked.

The Saeco 315 leads the accuracy parade so far at 100 yrds, I load it as cast and it fits like it was made for it.

I also use the Saeco .305 and Lyman 314299 but I have to size the noses to .301 first.

good luck

Its a bit light, but the RCBS 98 gr. SWC shoots exceptionally well out of my Marlin 32-20. I can pretty well count on at least 1, half-inch group at 50 yds. on each outing. This is with iron sights. It shoot just as well in .32 S&W. No gas check either. I have fired to 1,500 fps in the rifle without fouling.

In my 10 inch contender 30-20 I have settled on the Lyman 311008 cast out of 3 parts of WW to 1 part of Type. The boolit will weigh out of my mold 116gr.

I use 5.8/unique and and any small pistol primer.

The boolit is lubed with BAC in a Lyman .312 size die and then sized in a .309 lee push through.

This is a fun load. I think it is going about 1200fps.Shoots into a ragged hole at 25yds. and a pop can is easy at 100 yds.

Hope this helps....The 32-20 is my all time favorite caliber in the contender...Terry

The Saeco #322 is a winner in my .32-20 Ruger but drops out of the mold at .314" so you would have to size it down. I just got back from the range and so far it likes AA #9 from about 8-9 gr. and HS-7 (I know, going obsolete!) at 7.5 gr. That was as hot as I've loaded the HS-7 and they eject easily from the cylinders.

I would suggest you slug the throat and muzzle to see what you have. As you know I am sure, as mentioned above, it may be a bit of a chore to find what it likes with cast, but well worth it IMHO.
I have had pretty fair success with CB's from 120-200 in my 30-20. AA#9 is my go to powder then 2400.

Hi Jeff,

I have been getting great results with 2400 & AA#9 also @8 & 9 gr. respectively with a 120 gr. boolit. Thinking anything over 125-130 gr. is going to be about it for my revolver to get it to still fit the cylinder. Very interesting little caliber in modern guns using Starline Brass if ya ask me.

Newtire, What mold (or where are you getting) are you using to make those 120 grainers? I'm having trouble finding one, and I've been looking at Mountain molds. Anyone got one for sale?

The mold I am using is a Saeco #322. a guy named "Dragoon on this group got me hooked on that boolit. It is proving to be a very good one. Casts 121 gr. from my mold at .314" although lists at 118 gr.

i had a contender custom shop barrel that would not shoot any lead bullet load i tried , a rcbs 165 gr gc and a 125 gr gc saeco i tried 309 and 310 bullet dia, however my rpm xl in 30/20 will shoot the 165 gr rcbs with 9.0 grs of 820 for a 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yards for 25 shots . bob
