Did the original blackpowder cartridges use pure lead bullets?

this question is rather ambigious , yes they did .... some of them ...others used a lead tin ratio . and as for jackets there were an auful lot of calibres loaded with paper patched bullets............ and no they didnt......................Dean

Point taken.
I'm particularly interested in the 43 Beaumont, 43 Egyptian, 38-55 and 50-70.

dont know about the beaumont but the 43 was paper patched by the army 38-55 mostly was a lead alloy bullet and the 50-70 was a paper patch of about 473 gns it was tapered . and pure lead.............Dean

Sharps used a 16-1 alloy, I think Remington loaded with a 20-1 but would have to check that.

An early Winchester catalog shows the following:
.38-55 - 255 gr. bullet / 40/1 lead/tin
.50 Carbine - 400 gr. bullet / pure lead

I've shot some of those. . . .
Me, too. They would lead allot when they were fired, and made cleaning the barrel a real chore.
