Inspired by Kick me I should have bought it

What have you sold that you really wish you had back?

With that in mind I'd like your input on something I'm considering. I'm going to be joining a new range soon that has, among other things, practical pistol matches. I don't really have a good PP gun. I do have a colt king cobra that I am considering selling. It's seen a lot of use and does have a bit of rust but its very accurate and a joy to shoot. The only thing I use it for is target. It would be nice to be able to compete. Here's the kicker - it was the first gun I ever bought. I was 16 (24 years ago)

Your thoughts?

Oh, to answer my question - I had a Ruger 308 target rifle I wish I hadn't sold

Browning B-78 in 7mm mag. Damned rifle would put em through the same hole and was beautiful to behold. Had to sell it during some rough econimic times but damn I sure miss that rifle. Also regret all the 94's in both 30-30 and 32 Win Special i've parted with through the years as well as the Colt Woodsman my buddy just "had to have".

My old Model 70 Safari Express Grade in .458 Win Mag. I bought it as a shooter and used it as a shooter for twenty years, but I figured it had gone up substantially in those years. It did not and I sold it for $550.00 a year ago. I don't really care that much about he increase in value, but I just enjoyed loading and casting for it as well as shootin' it.

Sigh..... I bet the guy who bought it doesn't shoot it much. It had a Lyman peep sight and was ACCURATE! It would keep three shots touching at 100 yds. with those peep sights IF the boolit and load were correct and I had a "good eye day".

Such is life, as they say, eh?

Too many regrets to list but my former Rem 700 BDL in 22/250 sits atop the list and that was over twenty years ago. Also a Bob Allen gun case made of different colors of suede I let go with a shotgun to support my dirt bike habit back then. Don't really miss the shotgun but I'd sure love to have that purdy case back. FB

I had to sell all but three of my collection due to wife's health problems and loss of her insurance, really didn't have a choice as she needed the treatments to save her life, I will never get it back so be happy she survived. I sold my handgun collection due to needing the money at the time, 20+ years ago. :( TC Super 14 30-30, with Lyman sights on it, my first gun I bought, along with a scoped sighted 22 Hornet, a BF Arms in 7mm Supermag serial number was in the high 300's, Silver Hornpiper (Ruger 10 1/2" SBH stainless), and a Colt Combat Commander. I have a good collection now but I still miss them.

Went from about a dozen guns down to only 3. The 20ga single shot shotgun my grandfather bought me for passing hunter safety class when I was 12yo (32 next month). The Stevens .22LR bolt action I use as a squirrel gun and to check the trapline. My 10mm Commander I built that is my carry gun, home defense gun, and general hunting weapon. Also used for slaughtering livestock before I butcher them.

The other guns I sold for various reasons and mostly to pay off debt. Some guns I never shot, like the Ruger .44 mag autoloader or the 12ga 870.

Some guns meant something to me. At 14yo I worked at a farm with my stepfather's father all summer long and saved up to buy a Remington 870 20ga youth shotgun with the bird barrel and slug barrel. Sold it 10 years later to a coworker for his little sister's first gun. Such a sweet little gun that would be perfect for grouse hunting with a longer stock. But I moved on. Ruger GP100 6 inch was my first handgun. Sold it to finance the purchase of my Glock 30, my first carry gun (sold later when I got tired of plastic guns). H&K P7 PSP was my childhood dream gun. Only gun with a squeeze cocking mechanism. Neat gun, shot it some, spent more time in the safe than in the holster or at the range, so bye-bye.

I own guns for purpose, not to look at. Some carry memory and sentiment, but they are just objects. That Stevens 22 rifle I have was my grandfather's, one of only three guns he ever kept after serving in both world wars. The two other shotguns were no name manufacturers and I ridded of them. I kept the .22 because it's a .22, but it's a neat little rifle. So simple. Needs some work on feeding issues and the muzzle crown could use a freshening up of sorts.

Guns are objects. I'll always have one, but I've gotten through life this far with only one holding any sort of unhealthy clinging and that's the 20ga single shot shotgun my grandfather bought me to start me off hunting. One shot at a time, I've shot around 10,000 rounds through that gun while hunting, skeet, trap, clay shooting, working up handloads, etc. It warms my grandfather's heart when I show him pictures of a limit's worth of ruffed grouse I killed with that shotgun he bought for me 20 years ago.

A few years back my brother in law needed some money so I took his Remington 1100 and gave him $175.00. He was supposed to pay me back and get the gun back. 6 or 7 years went by and I started hunting with the gun. A year or 3 after that his brother in law wanted the gun, it had belonged to his Dad. The offer was $500.00. Because it used to be his father's gun and the price he was offering, I sold it. That shotgun would peel a squirrel from a limb at ridiculous distances and patterned good with buckshot and I still miss it.

I won a DCM sniper grand aucton grand in the mid 90's. It was in great shape and had all the extras in new packages. I needed money about 12 years ago and sold it for $800. The gunshop did not even try to haggle. Now I see them for over $4k and are not as good. I never even fired it. About the same time I sold my brother my Colt AR15 Hbar, a few years later he sold it back to me.

Let's see...

My 1st M1 Garand, Colt Lightweight Commander 9mm, S&W Mdl 29 in near mint condition and my 1st Contender are the major mistakes I've made selling guns.

Some were sold to finance other guns-like the Contender I sold to my brother so I could buy my son his first shotgun for Christmas. Don't regret that too much, just miss the gun so I bought a second hand replacement. I really regret the others I mentioned, but did replace the M1 for about double what I got for the 1st one.

I still have my 1st gun, a Win 94 .30-30....worked all summer when I was 14 to buy that rifle for $74 and some change-brand new! (Wish I'd have saved the box)

If you "have to sell" your Colt to get a competition gun, I'd wait to compete until I could afford the new gun. Can you compete with the revolver? If you know some of the other shooters, perhaps they would let you getstarted shooting their guns....

I'd think long and hard before letting your first gun go for that reason.

I got good money for both. I needed the money for a move 15 years ago. Also an AR-15 that I had tricked out. Currently gonna be heard replacing the AR, but I got good money for that as well.

With that in mind I'd like your input on something I'm considering. I'm going to be joining a new range soon that has, among other things, practical pistol matches. I don't really have a good PP gun.

If the matchs are IDPA or IPSC then they can be shot with a revolver but yes it is a handicap for most. Back when I shot IPSC with a highly modified 1911 .45ACP I was out shot afew times by those with revolvers but more often by those with 1911 in .38Super or those who were just better.

Like others here my first was really special ,it was a winchester 22 youth model single shot which I received for Christmas when I was 9 . I made the mistake of loaning it to a family member and he managed to lose it . I stil have my second gun which is an Ithaca Featherweight 20 ga. which I received for my 12th. birthday so it will be 56 years old in about six week.

I have been more of a pistol person than a revolver one all of my adult life and I have considered selling my old .38Special S&W base PPC my S&W .44 MAg. anda few others but decided that it is best to kept them. The way the gun grabbers are going they may grab all of our semi-autos but if we are then real lucky they may let us keep our revolvers, bolt actions, pumps, singles and doubles.

I've sold very few guns in my life and really only regretted one. It was a reblued Remington Rand 1911 that I traded a 1917 S&W for. I was working a summer job in Nebraska while in college. I sold it to a friend when I graduated in 1964 because I couldn't afford to shoot it. Used the money to buy a Ruger 10-22 that I could afford to shoot. Still have the Ruger.

I have a little bit of regret about the 1917 Smith but that is overshadowed by the 1911.

Haven't sold many that I miss, only one that comes to mind is a very early S&W 686 that I used for a duty gun and later a PPC "duty" match gun. One slick old gun but I sold it to another shooter, otherwise it would be sitting unused with my other match guns. I've never "had" to sell a gun, will be a sad day when I do but as has been pointed out, they're just objects.

Yes, I have regretted selling some guns that I sold.

I went through a nasty divorce in '89-90 and had to sell quite a few guns.
Things like a Sako L579 in .243 that was capable of one-hole groups at 100 yards.
A custom Remington 700 in .30/06 with the nicest stock I ever saw on a rifle.
A Browning 500A autoloader in 12gauge.
A stainless Ruger Super RedHawk in .44Mag with a 9-1/2"barrel and a 2x scope that I had used to kill my first handgun whitetail.

A Remington 870 12gauge that I never even got a chance to shoot.
A Remington 760 in .30/06 that I used to kill over 50 whitetail deer. I still haven't (after 20 years) been able to get my current 760 to shoot near as well as that one did.

An Ithaca M37 12gauge that was responsible for more dead ringneck pheasants than I can count.
A springfield Armory 1911A1 in .45ACP that was destined to be a race gun. I was still shooting competitively back then.

I still miss all of them even though I have many other guns.

I don't regret any of the guns I've sold. I made the decision and sold them for the same reason every time (to fund a gun I wanted more) and nothing has changed since I made that decision. Many have come and gone, the ones I currently have now are the ones that I like best. Should they fall out of favor or not see use they will move on down the road and another will take their place. I have a couple with sentimental value (father's 870 and my first rifle) that I will never sell, they will be passed to my children upon my departure for the great hunting lodge in the sky.

Finally thought of one. Sold an HK94 with HK removeable scope mount for $500 in 1987. Didn't have any use for it, hated chasing the brass. The only two that I regretted relinquishing of my own volition were a Colt Combat Commander that rivaled my Gold Cup for accuracy and a never-issued USGI M1 Carbine (Winchester, IIRC) that was absolutely pristine when I bought it.

The ones that really chap my butt are some of the ones that were stolen in a break-in at my parent's house many years ago -- the 20ga single shot (Remington, maybe?) that my Grandfather bought for me when I was 8 and taught me to hunt with, a vintage muzzleloading shotgun that was my Grandfather's and in very good condition (I fired it several times with Grandpa when I was kid and it was still in working condition when it was stolen -- what the hell did they want with that?), a Winchester Model 94 commemorative that I took my first deer with, a virtually brand new (I think I had maybe one box of shells through it) Weatherby Mk. V in .300 Weatherby, and a really nice Weatherby XXII .22 that was my go-to squirrel gun. There were a couple of others taken of no real consequence to me (a couple of junky shotguns and an Iver Johnson .22 pistol that couldn't hit the side of a barn even when shooting from inside it).

I kinda regret the ones that I traded, but at least I did it of my own accord and a did get a couple of nice guns in trade. I am really bitter about the ones lost in the robbery, though.

A first year 1895 with the Douglas 8 groove beautiful barrel that Marlin installed on that first year of production [perfect cast boolit barrel], AND, a Marlin 1894 Sporter in 44 Rem Mag. 22" barrel and half magazine which made it perfect. FN49 Venezuela 7x57 with sniper dovetail
Webley Green Army Model 6 " barrel
Webley Green Target Model
Both Webley's came to me with the cylinders cut for 45 Colt/Schofield... 45acp in half /full moon clips just didnt fit... the insides of the cylinders showed a short 45colt shell imprint.......sigh

I've sold a couple over the years that I wish I had now, but nothing that's not replaceable for a price.

I've made other financial mistakes that are far larger.

nickel plated S&W model 27 with a 6" barrel. And a red 1969 Camaro with a 350, 4 speed, etc. etc. Loaned that to a girlfriend for a day, the insurance company paid me for that one, I didn't have to sell it.

35 Marlin. Got it from a Customer for work I did for them. They had bought it new and had never fired it! I had to sell it a year later due to shortage of groceries.

I didn't sell these guns, but worse, my brother was moving to Seattle, and we separated some of Dad's guns, to take with. A Win 22Hornet, a Win Model 43 218 bee, and two of Dad's WWII pistols left with him. Who would have thought that 15 years later I find out he has been turned by the West coast left, and had gotten rid of those "evil" guns, and didn't even give us a chance to get them back. My father is 90 yrs. old and I haven't found a way of telling him yet

Hmm, not too much regret.

guns I sold and am not missing one bit
Mossberg 500 12ga combo, annoyed me with it's rattle when i walked in the woods.
870 Special purpose with a cantilever mount; traded in on a 1187 SP and am happy
Ithaca 87 combo, sold to a coworker for his son, was a good gun but didn't need it and decided I didn't want a full rifled slug gun.
ruger 77 .308, stock tip warped, not a bad gun but I don't miss it.
single six, not as accurate as I wanted, hated loading tiny cartridges into the chambers
blackhawk .357, same accuracy issues and I just preferred the swing out cylinders.

Slight regrets;
Colt 1911 series 80, was my first pistol and I put thousands of rounds through it and it had a nice trigger. I traded it on a kimber thinking I would be better with less wear.
Win9422, was a nice nice .22 but I didn't ever like the grip angle on the straight stocks, annoyed my that my wrist and grip weren't happy. Later replaced it with a winchester classic with a curved grip. Last year production 9422 but it's nowhere as nicely made or blued as the 1980 vintage one.

Second generation SAA, 4-5/8. Large chambers, and couldn't make any load work with the fixed sights. Got a 41 Mag Mod 57 8-3/8 in a straight up trade. Money wise, not good! Gun wise, an excellent trade! Both guns were as new in box. ... felix

Money is for paying bills and when paid the money is gone...I've made the mistake over the years of selling my "treasures" off to pay bills....Learned the hard way many years ago that once I sell a prized possesion I'll never have it back again...so my Wife can do with my guns, etc what she pleases after my time comes if I go first..till then they are not for sale...might give something to a family member or really close friend but that's all..

My crystal ball tells me that millions of Americans will have buyers remorse when they start making 200-500 dollar monthly payments to the Affordable Healthcare Act, (Obamacare.)

Sellers remorse? probably a few firearms, but the most seller's remorse is reserved for the 1959 Corvette with both tops (removable hardtop and ragtop) I sold for a little over a thousand dollars when I went into the navy and had nowhere to store it. Still wish I hadn't sold my blue and white baby. Wonder what it'd be worth today?

well olevern it would be a low of $30.000 to 65.000. depending on originality and options.

I sold guns 2 times one to get the down payment for my house. the other to buy my 66 corvette that I still have. I have bought and sold guns to make some extra money.

I have purchased and sold the same model (Ruger 10/22) multiple times - still kick myself for selling one that shot really well.

I sold a Israel HB FAL, 9mm Hipower and some others that I have not replaced
- I have got a FAL but it's not the same HB Isreal model and
I got a Hipower clone which was a good gun but not quite the same as an Ingel that had been worked over by my gunsmith friend.

I'd say run what you got and keep the memories going.

I have now felt the sting of a little sellers remorse. I loved shooting my SVT-40, but the darned thing ate up reloadable brass no matter what I did and was a real pain to clean well after corrosive surplus. I consoled myself by using it to get a Pedersoli Sharps.

Car regret....1976 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham with every option including 455 (last year) and T Tops, less than 20 made with the big engine and T Tops..
Guns
Nickel NIB Colt 1911, pd 249.95 for it in 1979
Ruger Redhawk 5.5 and 7.5 in 41mag , one to pay bills and the other because the $$ was important and I had a 7.5R
DWA VH8 in 41, didn't shoot as well as my 7.5R, but had absolutely the best SA trigger I've ever touched/breathed on..
14" TC barrel in 357 Herrett

Never had to sell anything I really wanted to keep. Most of my Firearms aren't worth a whole lot anyway! That said there have been a few things that I have had a chance to buy on GREAT DEALS!!! But have had no money to get them because of various life situations!!
