Ruger has a new rifle out this year called the Guide Gun chambered in 375 Ruger.

I'm looking for less of a pack gun and more of a really good cast boolit 300+yard hunting rifle. Good bear meddicine is also a plus.

I'm also told that Billings MT has a gun show this weekend I'm going to go to.

Well - a 275 - 300 grain 375 is going to shoot a lot flatter than a 45/70. And in your original thread you mentioned both the 375 H&H and 375 Ruger.

that I did. The CZ 550 Safari is a beautiful rifle with a 100/200/300y leave set up rear site that tops it off. I also have been made a pretty good deal on it NIB for $1,000+ a box of Hornady 300g dangerous game loads. A Leupold 3x may also get thrown in. It has the CZ set trigger and I think with cast it could be a real honey.

For what you stated (300 yard) the 375 would be a better choice. But if you like rainbow trajectories - then the 45/70 with a 400 gr plus boolit at 1,800 FPS will be a killer on both ends! I know I shoot one, Marlin Guide Gun first year production, with the porting. you need good ear protection with it. The 2 Elk I put down with mine had me near deaf in my left ear for about a week!

It will shoot MOA with my 430gr FP (75% Meplate) GC from a mountain mould and a healthy does of 3031 or H4198SC. Not a load for the faint of heart. It could be hotter - but I have grown found of my shoulder being able to work correctly.

I had a .375H&H CZ-550 American Safari, and it was one fine piece of work, I assure you - great fit/finish, outstanding checkered wood with primo inletting & a 2nd recoil lug under the rear bbl sight.

I installed a Leupold M8-3X DGR scope on mine, but used a nicely-finished set of Burris/CZ rings ILO the somewhat cruder (and more expensive) CZ rings.

The only alteration I'd recommend (I did it), would be to relocate the front sling swivel QD stud from the forend bottom to the barrel - I plugged the old stud hole in the FE with a .375H&H casehead.

BTW - I've owned/shot/hunted .45-70 M86's & High Wall's, and liked the CZ much better.

I wouldn't own a .375 Ruger of any ilk, mostly due to spotty-to-nil ammo availability, wherever.

Greetings
Have a CZ with the set trigger her. Mine is only a caliber .308 but the rifle was well made and the set trigger is fine to have for any long distance accurate shooting.
Just reread an article in Rifle magazine (#242) by Shoemaker and basicly he states a caliber.375 H&H (or Ruger) is a fine choice for big bears. The article is a basic comparison of the two .375's... Ruger and H&H. Both do the same thing. With good premiun bullets they will permanently stop bears.
If I really needed an up close "for sure today" stop a bear I would carry my double Fox 12 guage with caliber .685 WW round ball at 1550 fps. But I seriously dought that would ever be. The caliber .375 with a good Bearclaw or TSX 270 grainer would be high on my list. But I would not feel bad about having my Marlin caliber 45/70 with 5 rounds of 400 grain chugging along at 1850 fps. I would want to be shooting the Marlin under 50 yards as those big flat sluge shed velocity like ducks do water.
The real decider for me is the "up to" 300 yard shooting. The 45-70 will do it. But are you going to have enough elevation in your scope ? Are you going to put a long range tang sight on it ? Whereas the 300 H&H will cover that range withot any "aim for the top of the tree to hit the berm" windage. I shoot 45-70's at 300 yards. I also have a long range sights on those. My Marlin.. I pop at the 200 yard gong off and on. But I also know I need to hold near to the top of the burn to hit the gong.
So for me that 300 yard desire narrowed the whole score real fast. Get the caliber .375 H&H and you will not be sorry. You may even get the chance to use it one a big, nasty, bitty cruncher.

Thank you for the opinions. I have the CZ527 American and its my go to small caliber and shoots tiny little holes with jacketed anything and ragged holes with a cast load I stole from Bullshop.

Any ideas on how the 1:12 twist will handle 250-300g loads?

Assuming you mean cast bullets I push my 270 gr Lyman to 2200 - 2300 fps with very good accuracy out of my M70 three six bits with 12" twist........best accuracy is right at 2150 fps.

Yup talking about pretty much a cast only rifle. I'm changing my thinking a bit and want to find a projectile shape/size/speed then buy a rifle to match that instead of buying one and trying to make it do what I want.

Just my .02 centavos on the topic. I`d go with the .375 H&H over the Ruger. You can find H&H ammo alot easier than the newer Ruger ammo if a sudden need arises.

In Alaska it is standard policy that there be at least 1 worker on a highway work crew armed with a rifle in .375 H&H. This is how I came by my .375, from a retired state workers estate.Robert

I found plenty of 375 H&H loaded ammo and brass/dies today. Almost bought a Rolling block in 45-70 but the owner just wanted about $150 over retail for a used/dinged one to be worth it. I'm trying to kee my $$ in the wallet for the gun show Sat but that 375 is calling me from the showcase!

+1 for the cz a great gun manufacturer , and a worthy ammo choice 375h&h cast easy or heavy dangerous loads , no rainbow trajectory .. it would be my choice , heck i wouldnt even have to think about it

Well the choices overwhelmed me so i got both [smilie=w:

I bought the CZ 550 in 375 H&H and mounted a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10X on it.

Then i went to the Billings gun show (mostly junk/soap/knick knacks/rip offs) but managed to come out pretty well. A screaming deal on a new Rossi Rio Grande 45-70, 375 H&H dies, 100 pieces of 45-70 brass, 100 Balisticast .379 270g GC, and 45 pieces of 375 H&H brass for $590 total. A quick run to Scheels for 45-70 dies and Cabelas for another 50 375H&H brass and called it a day. I even have a few hundred left over for a couple new molds!

i had a red dot laying around so i put it on the 45-70. Not sure i like it honestly its a small objective and no magnification.

What is it about a big lead projectile sticking out of a even bigger case that make me chuckel?
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/NVScouter/jonsphone144.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/NVScouter/media/jonsphone144.jpg.html)

I loaded 375 H&H with the purchased Balisti-cast .379 270g LBT LFN over 68.5g of IMR4350@2300fps (calculated). Im sure they will lead a bit with that hard blue lube some of wich was knocked off. I hand lubed the MIA lube and may melt off the generic lube and hand lube with my lube. We'l see only 100 of these to last until my mold gets in and 25 are going down range tomorrow.
The 45-70 is the LEE 340g as cast over 50g IMR3031 @1850fps(calculated). I doubt the Chrony will come out this shoot, more of a break in session.

Looks like you did quite well, should keep your hands busy and your shoulder tender for months to come. Wanna borrow my PAST recoil pad?

Maybe

i shot 40 rounds of the 45-70 so i was softened up nicely for the 375. After another 25 rounds of that i was quite done. The 375 isnt too bad really, heavy rifle good recoil pad and a slower push.

This is to funny. I just bought a Rossi Rio Grande in 45-70 and have had my eye on a new 375 Ruger African. I keep telling myself that I don't need one at all as I already have my bases covered when it comes to having a good selection of calibers. Reading threads like these certainly aren't helping.

Hehe A local shop had that CZ in it since I moved here. Ever time I walked past it I had to handle it. I'd leave and say "what are you going to do with that?" Then a couple boot threads about 375s and cast topped with poor 30-06 expiriment and well......
