Got word from someone that sent me links to check up on for spent Mil 5.56 brass. Apparently they are using a thing called a popper: http://www.bouldinlawson.com/demil/equipment_detail.php?product=58

If you read up on that link it's pretty self explanatory what happens to the brass.

Here's a link to the auctions:http://www.govliquidation.com/auction/search?cmd=results&query=TQCaLa2ik2CALGpW2NzxPHzbeUunkU12TQ3xL2C80oOi 0aCALTO52lfSROrO3oJW3OrmLNnrPN2aklDfu-bDwlYzThJyL-bhTh5DXNhnPHDbEvD2

I've done a search using Bing and noticed that the popper has been in use for years, so why they're doing it again and for what reason EXACTLY I have no idea.

Hope this stuff doesn't hit the market the way things are going, talk about dangerous.

With all the gougers and unscrupulous dealers I hear about I wouldn't put it past anyone with $ on the brain to try and pass them off as reloadable.

So all they are totally annealed and worth only scrap, or what?

The entire case is run through a hopper that is running 1600 degrees.

It Obama's way of keeping it from being used by the public for reloading. Just one more step towards trying to disarm the American people.

So far, the popper lots are identified. One hopes.

If they go for more than scrap price I would be very wary of buying 5.56 brass from unverified sources in the coming months...

Is there any way the novice can identify this brass?

If so we should alert everyone about this unsafe garbage.

Squeezing it is the only way I would know. Bras should have some spring back.

you gotta watch him
if the brass is tumbled in stainless media you would never be able to tell until you fired it.
mashing it is your only real test at home.

It is really obvious what has been in the popper. It looks horrible. I bet it would take 3-4 hours in the ss tumbler to clean it up. It is horrible oxidized from the heat. I was looking at some last week. it was 20mm, a few pallets of it. The brass looked more like rusted steel than brass. you had to scratch it to even tell.

if someone took the time to clean it up, you might not be able to tell without a crush test or hardness test. But in its raw form it is really easy to tell. My partner buys certified brass that is not popped, Every lot is tested for hardness. It really is easy to tell unless someone works really hard to hide it.

Didn't the Govt try this a few years ago and got their weenies smacked?? I believe they were shredding it but either way they should be offering it for public use.

Some of the environmentalists have to remind the gov't that re-use is above recycle on the environmental R's list

Had lots of discussions about this yesterday. The 20mm brass I was looking at was a scaly grey color. I also saw a partial pallet of 50bmg that had been heat popped. It was flat black, Inside and out. They refer to it as 'black brass' abd let me tell you, It is black, Like someone dipped it in black powder coat. I really don't think you would have used black brass even before you ever knew about heat popping. This is being done some but not that much. It all just goes to be smelted and shipped to korea for $3.50/lb out of 4 tractor trailers he had less than one triwall of heat popped brass. I forgot to get pictures. I will get some next time.

Looks like we just found a nice way to anneal brass for swaging. Shouldn't take too long for 1000 9mm brass.

I think you wouldn't want the entire case annealed, only the case mouth or shoulder. If the case head is too soft there will be failure of the brass.

When a person uses spent 9mm cases for swaging the entire case gets annealed.

Mocaster is softening the entire case to use as a "bullet jacket" when swaging.

I thought about this also. But I am sure that is a piece of equipment that cost several thousand dollars.
