What 44 mag mold should I get? I plan on hunting deer nd maybe hogs with it and target shoot with it also. I'm reading that 240 gr, 250 gr, 265 gr, and 300 to 310 gr cast bullet molds are good with a lot of people liking 300 and 310 gr casted bullets. What mold should I get? I have a S&W 629 7.5" 44 mag.

I currently have several 44 mags as well as a few moulds ! Saeco# 944 200gr wc , #420 200gr tc , #441 240gr swc & the RCBS-240-sil . In the past i had a Saeco #433 300grfp but saw no advantage to it as far as accuracy & overall i liked the 240gr bullets better.

If i were to get 1 allaround bullet it would be a 240 to 260 gr swc,lfn or wfn bullet.

Since i usually dont hunt with a 44 mag anymore as i now have 454 casulls, i dont need heavy bullets for the 44 mag. my go to bullet for 98% of my shooting from 850 to 1250 fps is the saeco#420 200gr tc.

H&G 503 or the MiHec clone 432-256. It's a 260gr Keith boolit.

Really, a good 240-250gr LSWC or LFP is a more useful bullet than the heavier 300gr choices. I shoot them as well, but something like the RCBS 250grK is a good choice as is the Lyman cousin.

I have a Ranch dog mold that is 265 grains and it shoots really well. One of the custom mold makers could make you a clone of it. Mine is a tumble lube with a gas check and it shot great out of a 444 and shoots very well out of my Smith and Wesson 329PD.

Lyman 429421 would be my first choice for hog. Pistol or rifle.
Depending on the size of your deer of course but for where I live with these tiny southeastern whitetail, a Lyman 429215 is about perfect when driven full throttle through a Marlin 1894. NOE has/had versions of both of those molds, in solid and HP.

The NOE 429421 with the reversible pins will give you the classic Elmer boolit in either penetrating SWC or expanding SWCHP format. This would seem to solve all one's .44 needs.

My favorite 44 molds are in this order the 240 rcbs swcgc lyman 429244 and 429214 yes there all gas checked molds. Yes gas checks arent cheap but these three molds consistantly outshoot about everything in my guns. Worth the cost to me. Ive taken deer sized game with all three and all three do fine on game. If you want heavier the 280 lbt lfngc is a good bullet. the lyman 429640 is too if you can find one. If you want cheap bullets the 429421 is hard to beat.

My six inch model twenty-nine is only a little lighter than your revolver and I've found an LBT 250FN is about as heavy as I want in the field . There isn't a deer on my side of the state it won't drill a hole all the way through ........ except for the cast iron deer in the neighbors front lawn . Please don't tell 'em how the hole got there huh? [smilie=s:

Right now I'm trying to work with a mid-range load and a H&G 503 bullet for a four inch gun , that's kinda fun too .

NOE has a 265 gr mold like one of Ranch Dog molds that has worked very well for me. 2 Deer within 75 yards out of a 7.5 inch SBH. The Lee 310 gr is my other go to in SRH. It may be too long to use in the lower crimp groove in the S & W.

Jack, I find that 7 to 8.6g of Green Dot works well in my various .44 mags with my Mihec 503 clone. Velocity is 886 to 1043fps depending on gun and bbl lengths.--Shuz

I'd got to accuratemolds.com and take a look at the many styles Tom has and if by chance you can't find one that suits your needs email Tom what you want and he'll whip it out for ya

If there is a bad mould design for the .44's, I haven't found it yet. I mostly agree with Lloyd, and have all the moulds he mentioned, plus another half dozen. The Keith 429421 shoots about as well as the gas checked designs, but my best accuracy is with 429244.

For deer sized animals, any 250 gr. plus boolit at 1200 to 1300 fps. is going to penetrate completely. For bigger game like Elk, the Lee 310 FNCG would be better.

I wish there were a pat answer for you
however its not that easy
I am partial to the MP 44-640 hp for deer hunting but then again...
I also have a Accurate Molds 300 gr boolit with a larger meplat that just screams accurate at the rifle range
what you need is more than one for your hunting needs and mood at the time
