I have a 686 and it goes really well with heavy boolits in 38 spesial. I've gotten a Lyman 358156GX mold and was wondering how this is going to perform without the gas check in mild loads for the 38. For the lighter loads I prefer Clays. Thoughts about using this fast powder for this heavy 170 gr boolit ?

The plan for this boolit was to shot hot 357 magnum loads with or without the GC, but why not try it in 38 also. Clays and a NOE 358429 is a tack driver load with 3 gr Clays :)

Only experience I've had with heavy bullets in .38 Special was a 358627 in front of 3.5gr Unique.

I've loaded Ideal 358315 boolits (200gr RN gaschecks) in my Taurus Model 65 (357Mag) and it functioned just fine. They hit the target at 15 yards a bit lower than wear the sights are regulated for because I loaded the 38 Special brass to where they were going at 750fps which was the original speed of the old 200gr 38S&W loads for the British Enfield Pistol. Granted, it may be going slow but its the same velocity as a 200gr 45acp cartridge so I'm confidant it would smack something pretty good should it need to hit something.

5.0gr of Unique with a 170gr 358429 bullet is a classic load in .38 Special.

^ That looks like an excellent combo

Anyone with experience with Clays? I do not have Bullseye on my shelf. I do have N320 and N340 but I really like the recoil impulse from Clays on light loads.

I've tried the Lyman #358429 ahead of 5.0gr Unique and it didn't do so well in my S&W M10. I don't know if it was because it wasn't true to form (the bullet looked as though it were from a modified Lyman mould, as the bullet had a narrow front band) or if my gun just plain didn't like it. My interest has since renewed in heavy bullets in the .38 SPL and I've been thinking about trying the Lyman #358430. I've also been thinking about using that bullet along with the older load data with 2400. I like woods bumming with my S&W M10 a lot and something with more pizazz than a 158gr SWC would sure be comforting at times.
