I have a buffalo classic reamed to 45-120. I have a mold coming from accurate molds that is a 480 grain gc. I am looking for a load to get around 2000 fps. Someone ever mess with this cartridge before.

Do you have cases for the rifle?

All I can imagine when you shoot a 480 grain bullet from that light rifle at 2000 fps is who ever gets up first is going to be the winner.

I have heard the the BC in 45/70 has enough kick with black powder and 500 grain bullets.

I use 45 basic brass. I got the gun weighing about 11 pounds to help soak up the recoil so it shouldnt be to bad. I been shooting the 300 hornady hp with 80 grains of i3031 with not much recoil.

Next question, why so high of a velocity and what are you going to use it for?
I have 45/70, 45/90, and 458 Winchester and the lightest bullet I shoot is 400 grain (I do have a 330 grain gould bullet mould MiHec made to try) and lighter loads are getting to be more enjoyable to shoot.

I would stuff that case full of black powder and seat a heavy PP boolit over it. No chance of over pressure and you get to have the fun of experiencing that cartridge the way it was designed to be fired. The old straight-walled cartridges are awesome when loaded with the Holy Black.

I find that a light load with a very heavy bullet is more enjoyable than a heavy load with a light bullet. And both of those situations take advantage of big cases (otherwise why not just shoot 45/70, yes?)

I just wanted to say that recoil seems to be handled already with an 11 pound rifle, but in case it is not, (my handi weighs 5.5 lb and 3.5" 12 ga slugs are NOT FUN!), a "limbsaver" brand recoil pad installs quickly and is indeed a limb saver! I literally can not shoot my 12ga or my black powder H&R without it. the 20 ga is marginal.

dumb question, is it OK to shoot a cartridge like this with substitutes like american pioneer powder? goex is hard to get here and is saved for the flinter. if APP is OK, I might just have to get a 45 cal barrel fitted.
