It looks as though during the loading process the shoulder buckled.

Just my .02

It looks like someone has the sizing die not adjusted right on a neck sizer

They obviously don`t have the first idea about reloading due the number shown that are all that way. Wonder how long and how hard they tried to get a cartridge to chamber before they just chucked them? I also would wonder how much and what type of powder charge they hold.Robert

it's a gray ball type powder with two sizes of grains. not like one i use so don't have a guess. they are all the same. so what ever they did was consistence. :???:

I didn't even think about the free bullets. Sweet!

Over-annealed necks/shoulder????

Someone may have been fire forming, and used a couple intermediate dies to take the brass down to the point it would chamber.

Sweet you found freebullets. You can use the primers for light loads also. You gotta love range presents.

After you salvage the bullets and dump the powder, you could make 45 ACP shotshells out of the shortened brass.

Looking at the shiny line around the shoulder. Wondering if that's the old shoulder location on a 243 Ackley Improved case. Possibly they tried sizing A.I. cases back to 243 Win.

Yep, and some brass for the recycle bucket!

Do those have a .243 headstamp? Looks like a failed attempt to convert something to .243. Maybe it is the new "double chin" venturi effect double shoulder?

I thought that some Lee dies (collet size?) were known to do that if improperly adjusted.

How the previous owner managed to disfigure so many cases is a mystery.

Pull bullets, fertilize lawn, fireform with light load, save cases for boolit use. The cases aren't scrap yet.

I am curious if the cases are once fired or new.

except for one way back in the corner. They all look pretty uniform. I'd suspect a poorly adjusted seater/crimper die.

LOL!
I've done alot of silly wildcatting and made some very unique cartridges via mistake before, But I've never seen a "double chinned" neck/shoulder junction that pronounced before.

Just think. That guy could be shooting next to you the next time you're at the range.....Let's hope his next loads come out better.

all have 243 head-stamp. i dropped them in my 243 case gauge they all stick out a little and the necks are short. i don't think they will chamber.

Maybe he was attempting to invent recoil bands on the brass to reduce over felt recoil? Nope, just an epic fail! They look cool though!

I did something similar many years ago while trying to crimp 6MM Remington using a seating die that unbeknown to me did not have the crimping feature and as you may have guess the shoulder collapsed on my rounds also.

Grampa:
Those cartridges have been reloaded improperly. You should NOT have fired them in any firearm. It looks as though the shoulder of the case was buckled when seating the bullet. The brass IS now very badly fatigued. If you look closely, you would be able to see very fine stress cracks where the brass is folded over. It will be very dangerous to fire those cartridges in any firearm.

Yep,some novice hand loader put way way to much crimp on them while seating bullet. I never would have fired them, the same guy put the powder in them how much powder you ask? Well this time it wasn't enough to blow up an Encore but maybe next time it will be? In my opinion it was a very very bad idea to fire them. but some like to live on the wild side weather it be with just the one eye or both. Dennis

With all the crazy things going on in this world today I wouldn't have fired them. I would have pulled them down for the bullets. Glad it went well for you though.

i pulled one apart and weighted the powder charge it was within the normal range.

there were no signs of high pressure on the first shot.

i felt it was no more of a risk then fire-forming an AI load.

The only problem with that is that the "DATUM" line (to which the headspace is measured) has been
moved back by the shoulder being buckled. There is nothing for the case to headspace against
(the shoulder).
By the way, I reload and shoot for one of the AI cartridges.
Very bad idea to shoot those. Just my .02.

the head space was long by a .001-.002 by my case gage and fit tight in the gun

I think I might just have yanked the bullets for my .243 and added the brass to the scrap bucket, I don't like to push my luck like that!
41.5 grains of Reloader 15 is down to the gnats butt with a 70 gr TNT in my .243, where as 41.5 grains of a fast ball pistol powder would turn it into a bomb. Just having the correct weight is not enough for me, I have to know the powder as well.
