If you have ever used a muffler bearing alignment tool, you would know. 308 is the right size for a 5/16 bearing, any larger and it would stick.

Sheesh! Any fool should know that it puts a bevel on a .308 loob groove, i bet you could do a whole box full in no time with a tool like that!

OK guys, give the new kid a break. It looks to me like a Lyman 310 die for 308 Winchester. Or a bullet sizing die for a 310 Tong tool?

Not a powder through die and not a 310 tong tool die has standard 7/8 threads. It is like a competition seater die, but flat where the nose is and like a cylinder all the way through it.

Looks like parts to an old swaging die

Not 310 die, threads WAY too coarse.

Guys - give him a break,
everybody knows that they haven't used that size of muffler bearing in YEARS. :bigsmyl2:

Bill

PS, really is not 310 tool.

Actually, the advent of the dynamic dangle clamp has obsoleted all muffler bearings. Probably why we see so many of these laying around.

I do believe it is a seater die.

Could be a base forming die as part of a swagging set, missing the nose die. It would function something like the RCBS dies only upside down.
That is my story and I am sticking to it.
Actually I have something similar with 310 threads that I cannot figure out.

It`s a Ferbascant seater/sizer tool, any plumber worth his 36"Rigid pipe wrench should know this!Robert

Plumbers? I'm guessing the knurled part used to be threaded until the DIY novice plumber put a pipe wrench on only part way before twisting.

I'm with Dean! It looks just like one my cousin's uncles' brother used to have back in '07. (that's 1907)

What does the inside of the upper part look like? Pics, maybe?

If I had to guess, I would say it looks like a bullet puller collet die missing the tommybar and maybe the collet.

No markings on it at all?

Can't see what's inside. Nose sizing die?

I believe this might be the best answer..... It has all the makings of a once complete bullet puller.

Many thanks for the help...

In New England they call that a "thing-a-ma-bob" but in New York it would be a "wat-cher-collet". And...... Although NOT the correct color for the aforementioned "wat-cher-collet" it just may be a "whoosie-watsis". Now..... If it has a straight cylinder bore and a flat top seater..... In all probability it is a compression die for black powder OR a seater die for shotshell components. I have been known to be wrong, and my ex-wife NEVER failed to make the world aware iof that fact. But........ That's my guess!
