I have a pre-64 Winchester 94. I recently started casting and handloading the c309-113-f soup can. I'm having real issues with seating depth. At OAL greater than 2.34" the top driving band digs into the lands and the bullet gets pushed deeper into the case. At OAL less than 2.34" the action won't cycle normally. Anybody else use this round in .30-30 and can you give me your OAL?

You might want to try a nose sizing die. They can be made in any custom nose riding diameter and have an adjustable taper point so you can size down the driving band from the base dia. to the nose dia. and I found that I can now use all of my 30 cal. molds.

I was surprised even after crimping that they get pushed deeper into the brass. If I seat at 2.355" and chamber the round, after extraction it comes out at 2.331". There are slight marks on the top driving band but I'm using the minimum powder (IMR4198 @ 20GR) so I guess it's safe enough from a pressure standpoint.

what's wrong with the boolit making contact and setting it's own oal when chambered?
you'll have a consistent tension in the chamber from round to round.
they do come back out of the chamber don't they?

you other option is to change boolits.

That's kind of what I'm thinking now. Thanks guys.

86LG4T5,
In addition to what has been suggested, you could use a Lee FCD (Factory Crimp Die) which will cut it's own crimp groove after seating the bullet to 2.330" O.A.L.

Another option would be to shorten the case so that it lines up with the crimp groove when the bullet is seated to 2.33" O.A.L.

I'm shooting an old group buy 314440 in my Marlin 30-30's. They engrave the entire nose when I chamber them. It is a little effort with the lever, but they chamber and eject. I'd guess you have a very light crimp on yours.

It is lead that we are talking about. You have no pressure issues.

Exactly!!! If you can eject a loaded round without the bullet getting stuck in the throat I would shoot them and see how they group.

If using a base first type sizer and using quite a bit of pressure to size it the nose is probalby swelling up. Measure a nose before and after sizeing.

I am resizing, but there's hardly any effort. They're casting at .311 and I'm sizing them to .309 and adding a gas check. I think the nose is just too short and flat to chamber normally. So I have to seat it shallow allowing the whole top driving band to sit outside the neck. Reason why it seems to shorten when it gets chambered is I'm crimping inside the top grease ring, so it's collapsing down when the top driving band hits the lands. I tried seating it even shallower and crimping on the second driving band but then it's hard to close the bolt. Thanks for all the replies, I'm just going to shoot it like this.
