Hoping to start smelting down the 200lbs of lead wheel weights I have, (in all those Folgers cans) this coming weekend.

what ever you do DO NOT hit the side of that cast iron pot with your laydel when hot to knock out junk out of the laydel you might not like what happeneds I did not it crack and a streem of lead came out and what a mess I had on my hands that is one thing the second thing is DO NOT pick that pot up with lead in it with that wire handle you have no control over it and bad things can happen when you are not in control of the lead D Crockett

Thanks for the reminder D. Crockett. I read several mentions of being gentle on the dutch oven, and cast iron in general. I am guessing that after I get the lead up to temp (700 degrees), I'll need to turn back the burner on my fryer, to keep the temp from rising more as I start to ladle the cleaned lead after the dross has been removed and lead fluxed (using pine sawdust). Going to try to figure rig up some kind of wire holder for my Lyman Thermometer, to help hold it in the dutch oven.

I'm getting my things together too--not that much let. How would some kind of stainless steel pot work for smelting? I'm going to try and make some kind of molds in stainless for ingots.

D. Crocket cuts and sells. Propane tank smelting pots. Does a great job
