I loaded the last of my 2400 last night and best I can tell the world is out of stock. I'm thinking seriously about tearing down some of my 22LR and using the powder from two of those cases into each 44 Mag case. 2x22=44 right? Just an early April fools joke. But the lack of supplies out there is no joke. I'm shooting the airguns a LOT. Here's to the return of sanity.....

Last month an old friend came by and wanted to know if I wanted his old powder, Had an old 5 pounder of 2400 in the old Red can. There was 4 plus pounds left! He wouldnt take any money, appearantly I had given him a mess of cast bullets about 10 years ago. Couldn't remember but I'll go with it, Karma can be sweet.

I too am lucky. I traded into an unopened 15 lb cardboard barrel of 2400 last summer. I think I am set for a while.

I was out of H110 for my blackhawk a month ago. The local shop didnt have any either but had some 2400 which I had never tried as H110 always worked well for me so I decided what the heck and bought 2lbs. Have not opened them yet.

I've got to take inventory in my bench and see what all I'm out of.
The good news is, if I didn't shoot too much, I'm good for a while. I just don't like being completely out of anything (and I am on some things).
The good news is, I think this hoarding foolishness (mostly folks trying to make a buck off of a panic) is about to die down a little.
Last weekend at the Sparta Gunshow $700 AR's were going were only $950 instead of $2,000.
I've even heard rumors of .22 shells being available (on occasion) at Wal Mart again.

Walmart here had both 22LR and 9mm on the shelf. I hope it's getting better.

OUT OF 2400??? NOW THAT IS A TRAVESTY!! I've been buying a pound here and a pound there as money allows, was in my favorite LGS last weekend and wanted to buy some trail boss -- I've just found that it works very well with about everything I can load with it.

I pulled three cans off the shelf and the little powder Natzi comes running up; "I hope those aren't the same powder!!!" "Why yes" I responded. I was then informed that the three pound per day limit per customer also means none of the three pounds can be the SAME powder! REDICULOUS!

THEN I watched the powder Natzi as the shelves got low go behind the counter and restock the shelves immediately with the same powder that clients had bought so I snuck a peak -- they had plenty of all the powders so I think they're just trying to keep profit margins high on us.

Could be my paranoia but dang, I hope the craziness ends soon.............

Well, I picked this time to start loading a couple of new cartridges. I had modest amounts of 2400, Unique, and Bullseye because I wasn't actively loading with any of them. [smilie=1: Then I started looking around and I found I had a nearly full pound of Accurate #7 that I had gotten for testing about 10 years ago and not used, and it's looking good for my 327 Fed Mag... then it dawned on me! I've got almost 15 pounds of H-108, which is a long gone surplus powder from Hogden. It can be exchanged grain for grain for Accurate #9 which I wanted to use in the 327, so I should be good to go. :Fire: Now if I could just find some more Bullseye for my little 32 S&W Longs.

Man, out of 2400. That would be a disaster of epic proportions for sure.

I read an article by Paco years ago that he considered 2400 to be one of his most vital powders and if he could only have one that would be it. I looked around in my loading books and you know what, he, for the calibers I load is right.

So I acted accordingly. I was in an out of the way shop once and saw that they had eight of the older one pound cans of 2400. Paper cans made by Hercules with the old price. I did what I knew was right and relieved him of them. Over the years I've managed to scare up more here and there so I'm good to go. It's a great powder and very versatile.

Mr. Frog,

Where are you? I've got some Red Dot that it excess to my requirements if by some chance you're near me I could help you out.

I try to always have a full or almost full can of Unique, 2400, 4227, and 4198. When I am below 3/4 full I just start looking. Those will handle anything I shoot.

Yep, me too! I've been scrambling to see what I can substitute. Fortunately I do have quite a bit of Unique and Red Dot and Accurate #7 so I should be able to get by. And I will be out scouring the shelves for some 2400! [smilie=b:

I still have several pounds of unopened 2400, Bullseye, Unique, Blue Dot and W296 and H110.
Once I settle up with the IRS in the next week, I will be looking for some 4-8# containers of those powders as well as Red Dot and Promo, so that I have some long-term supplies for handgun reloading.

I know where there are some of each at LGS, I just have to pay my tax bills to the state and Fed before I spend the money for them.

I was surprised two weeks back when my LGS got in a shipment of Alliant powders--their first in 4 months! I picked up a pound of Unique and 2400, but left the rest for those less fortunate than I, since I already had several pounds of each.

LGS got some Alliant 2 weeks back. Bullseye, Unique, red dot, green dot, RE 15 and 2400, 1 lb cans.

They have some 2400 left, also red/green dot, the others are gone.

Nothing on the shelves here, but I'm still burning through the powder I bought when Clinton started banning things in 1994.

I prefer AA#9 anyway. I've got 2-3 lbs of 2400 that I'd gladly trade for #9 or Varget if the logistics were right. (i.e. FTF in SE Ohio)

Can anyone tell me what it looks like? I got a few cans of old stock powder on trade from the widow of a friend who passed away. I have an open can. It looks like WW231 flakes but is darker, like black. Is that what 2400 looks like? Thanks.

My advice is: If it isn't labeled and you don't know what it is, use it to fertilise the garden. Good source of nitrogen.

Its labeled and in an original can, a Hercules can. I found a picture, it is what it is. Thanks anyways.

There are powders out there that look very similar, yet vary greatly in their burning rates.
Just sayin'...

I put a post in my local Craigslist offering two unopened boxes of Hornady 300gr XTP-MAG J words for 1 lb of 2400. Heh, IT WORKED!!

And the guy who traded with me invited me to his place to come shoot, and gave me permission to hunt the woods behind his place which are loaded with deer.... Turns out he is a super nice guy, just good people as you would ever want to meet, has a reloading room over a huge garage with 6 presses set up, must have 40 diff kinds of powder, reloads about every caliber known to man. Had a great day shooting and made a good friend.

I haven't tried 2400 yet, really wanted to, just couldn't find any. Tried #9 instead. Seems like a good substitute though. I'll try 2400 someday.

Running out of 2400 is against my religion. I planned ahead with Obama in office! Still buy one pounders when available to be sure I don't run out in the future. it is my go to powder!

Fear not. At the Tanner show in Denver last weekend there was all the Alliant ( 2400 ) powder that anyone could ask for. 2400 @ 22.95 per lb.
Have patience, this thing is coming to an end but let it be a lesson to all. This isn't over yet. AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE, KEEP YOUR SUPPLIES UP.

Several of my retailer customers (I wholesale fishing gear) who also sell powders have even been asking me if I have heard anything about powders. They and even some of the large local shooting equip wholesalers have not seen a pistol powder for six months particularly 2400, Unique, Bullseye, AA-7 etc. Is this going on elsewhere in the country?

I love 2400 in my 44mag and 357 mag. Just started playing with it in my .30-06 when I ran out.

I am low on everything...I was doing powder inventory yesterday and felt like I hit the lottery when I found an unopened pound of Unique that I didn't remember buying. I was on cloud 9 the rest of the day.

Quilbilly, I can't vouch for the rest of the world, but it is sure slow coming here. I have seen 2400 at the lgs exactly 1 day in the last year, and I check religiously. I have run across unique 3 times in the same time period.

Being an Elmer Keith fan, I have always shot a lot of #2400. I use it in .44 Magnum, .357, and 45-70. It has been missing from shelves in my neck of the woods for a while.
I went to the local gun shop and found Western Powders Enforcer. A quick look in Lee's #2 book showed it having a burn rate almost the same( a bit slower) than #2400. I tried some, and using the data for Enforcer in the Lee #2 or Lyman cast #2, have grown to love this powder. Western's website has expanded their load data section also.
Enforcer is a fine substitute for #2400. I don't know if you have any in your area, but it is worth trying.

I was devastated when I ran out of 2400. But now I have learned there are other powders. I really like AA#9 and 296. Would never tried them if not for the powder shortage.

Williams Gunsight in Flint, MI. They are the best, when everyone else got an attack to terminal greediness, they held the line on their prices. Had 2400 and every Alliant powder in stock when I was there 2 weeks ago. They understand memories are long and customers are hard to come by.
