Hello
As I'm new to both casting and reloading I'm trying to read all I can
What I'm trying to figure out is this. The lyman manual lists sr4759
for use with a 170 gr cast in the 30-30. The mold I have is the lee
170 gr fp . Can I use the lee bullet with the lyman data for the same
weight ?

Yes you can. What kind of gun are you going to shoot this out of and will it be for hunting or plinking/target shooting and at what distance?

Yes, a rule of thumb is that you can use same or slightly lesser weight projectiles loading information.
Do not use loading information if your projectile is heavier that what is given as this creates increased pressure.

An odd quirk is that the Lee Modern Reloading manual does not give information for a 150grain cast, even though they make a nice mold in this weight. They do list data for a 160grain cast load and so I feel comfortable using this information.
The Lee Manual lists data for 170 cast but only with Accur and Ram powders for some reason.

I'm planning on loading for a marlin 30-30 to start and eventualy adding other calibers. I'm looking for a general plinking/hunting load. so far with commercial ammo my rifle seems to prefer the 170gr so I figured that would be a good starting point

170 is perfect for cast in the .30-30 carbines.

Boolit design and alloy can affect pressures quite a bit, but as long as you're not right near the top of the data you can substitute equal weight of slightly different designs and be safe. I use the 311041 data for the Lee 170FN and have shot both boolits in my gun over the chrony with the same loads, they were very close in velocity.

Try 30gr LVR w/ Rem Primers & Brass. This is My Pet Load in .30-30.
I shoot the Same Boolit w/ this load in my Marlin 336 w/ Excellent Results.
I get approx 2000fps w/ 3/4in groups @ 75yds & Fantastic Penetration.
This Load is 10% Below the Listed Start Load & Shoots Great in my gun.
If you need more Power you can Work up to the 36gr Max Listed & get about 2300fps. All I know is that 30gr Shoots Great w/ Zero Leading.

Just realized as I posted that this is a fairly old thread that got resurrected, but I'll throw this out there anyway.

I just recently started testing SR4759 & I've had excellent results with 16gr SR4759 & the NOE 311165 profile boolit sized to .311, so as long as your cast boolits are large enough in diameter to properly fit the throat/bore, I imagine your combo ought to work fairly well also. I've also had good results with 16gr 2400, 18gr IMR 4198 and ~22-24gr Alliant RL7 with those bullet weights.

Agree w/ YunGun 4198 is a Very Good Shootin Powder w/ these Boolits.
Except that I'm using 20gr of H-4198.
Sweet Load. Nice & Mild & Super Accurate.

I use the RCBS 150gr Cowboy boolit (sized .310) cast with linotype over 7.5gr of Trail Boss. Velocity is around 1000fps and lots more comfortable to shoot than my 1600fps load using 4198 (btw 4198 meters awfull). The Trail Boss meters easily and accurate.

Funny...My Light Load in the .30-30 is 7.6gr TB w/ Lee 170gr LRNFP.
Real Fun Load. Zero Kick & sounds like a .22.
