So it looks like I'm getting my hands on a Lyman 245498 for my Savage and Nazi 243s. Would you use cast in the 243 for whitetail, and if so where would you reach for in terms of velocity? Cast in rifles is an all new game for me. If the boolit will just be a plinker and woodchuck slayer I'm fine with it, too. I have plenty of condom bullets for killing Bambi.

 Have been wondering about heat treating a certain nose pour for the nieces 243 myself.

Here's an oldie to look at:

Hehe, I read that thread before I put an offer up for the mold. That kind of accuracy out of a cast design is really impressive. Now to find out if I can hunt with it effectively or not. I'm sure if I sent it out for a hollow point job it would be as lethal as anything.

IIRC, Cast handbook #1 claimed the 244498 was too heavy for accurate work in the 243. I have had good results with the RCBS 95 but at speeds of less than 2000 fps and would hesitate to shoot anything larger than a coyote with it. I don't think LY thought the had a problem with the weight but I believe it may have had to long of a bearing surface. In any case it should bear some trials as a lot of those old wives tales have been proven wrong. I personally will stick with a 7mm cast as a minimum for deer, and that is with hand picked conditions,.

The Savage is a 1:9.25 twist, so a bit faster than the standard. Bullshop's kid seems to be doing just fine with it. I had a feeling it wouldn't be much of a hunting boolit without a cavity in the face of it.
