8mm mauser loads. from 7.62x51 NATO (.308 WCF) Brass?
Trimmed, thinned, and annealed and re-squeezed,

How is this done?
I have bardan primed brass to use for dia. and could even pull the J-words
and have some 7,62x51 Boxer brass in route as a package deal so
I have a 8mm mauser and brass prices are ugly, so I have read something about this, can this be done? anyone ever done this or have I misunderstood

I am not ready to start doing this but if i could start to read up on it and learn nuff to be safe, and then il know right questions to ask so I dont sound so dumb about re-squeezeing,, hahaha

Please advise
Patrick

Not going to work, 7.62x51 is too short for 8x57! You can make 8x57 from .30-06 however.

Yes, my post was on the '06 brass being re-squeezed.
Enjoy!

or any cartridge based off the .30-06, then there is the 7x57 case that you can neck up.

i make 8mm from 06 when i have a neck split.its fairly simple,put it thru a8mm die,trim to proper length.

Works much nicer if it is annealed first.

+1 what oldarkie said, it's one of the easier conversions I do actually.

I did some about a yr ago for a 9x57 from 06'.

I tried to get some 7x57 out of 308 it formed out nice except for the neck being .3 short. 8x57 I don't think would have any neck at all.

I have seen a picture of a .308 case shot out of a 7.92 chamber. *Not* pretty, almost NO neck.

Major blunder, nephew NOT paying attention. Rifle was a Rem. 7400, it survived unharmed. Shell was firmly stuck in chamber.

His wife's shells got mixed in the shooting box, she had a M-100 Winchester. I loaded the .308's as a mild plinking load with a 130 H-spire point bullet.

The .280 is a 30-06 necked down to .284, so you can just begin to see the start of the shoulder of the .280 on the end of the .308 case.

8 mm mausers made from 30-06 have a lot of extra case in the neck area that has to be trimmed off. Making them is as simple as lubing and running the '06 case through the FL 8mm die. Leaving the expander button out until after trimming the excess neck off, makes for less effort in withdrawing the case from the die. Make sure you have enough taper on the end of the expander button, as it has to expand from .308 to .323. Use of a Hornady die with their elliptical expander is the best bet.

THE HANDLOADER'S MANUAL OF CARTRIDGE CONVERSIONS is a truly excellent book, and a valuable resource. A major resource/reference book.

I wish I could make the equipment they show.

One thing that works for me to speed up the trimming process; I mark the trim-to length with my dial calipers, then take just a few seconds to grind them down close with a coarse wheel on my bench grinder. With practice you can grind them really fast and square the end close to the mark. A quick twist with a chamfer tool, a trip through the 8mm sizer, a final trim to length, then anneal. I set aside any '06 brass with split necks and have a bunch of 8mm brass now.

One time years ago I loaded up a bunch of .243 ammo as a gift for a friend, a young guy turning 18. I went through my scrap brass and picked out anything that could be converted to .243 (30-06, 25-06, .270, .280, 8mm, 7mm, etc.). Of course .243 requires an extra reaming step but they all turned out fine. They were loaded on the light side out of caution for varying case capacities, but still great practice ammo. It was just for fun because he couldn't figure out why all the .243 rounds had weird headstamps.

I found out later that his dad was very unhappy about it, and wanted him to throw them away. As a compromise he let him take them out on the mountain behind their place and shoot them up, so long as he threw away the brass. He had the idea that someone would get confused by the headstamps and blow themselves up.

Yeah Hamilton Books has some good prices but limited selection. I think they deal mostly with publishers over runs and leftovers like when a new edition is coming out. But cheap shipping. You can do a search by subject and find some interesting titles.
