Tossing around the idea of rechambering my Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. to .35 Whelan. Any thoughts as of cost, would barrel twist need to change, is receiver strong enough?

Leave the Marlin in 35 Rem. the receiver isn't long enough for 35 Whelen which is a 30-06 case necked up to 35 caliber.

besides, with lead bullets, that 35 Rem will drop about anything south of Alaska and its Kodiaks.

I'd like to rechamber a 336 to 35 whelen too, but I can't find my ACME action stretcher.:kidding:

I believe you could rechamber to 358 Winchester.
A browning BLR would make a suitable action for a lever 35 whelen.

Maybe 35 Rem Ackley Improved would give you the horsepower you want.

That is what I was thinking, reciever not long enough. I'd say don't fix what ain't broken.

Good morning
About the biggest thing I can think of would be a 45-70 necked down to a caliber .35 or even the 444 Marlin case necked down. Either one would give your shoulder a pleasing massage.

There's an online article somewhere about rechambering them to .358 Win.

I've used some Ranch Dog load data to improve the performance of the 35Rem. It's more than enough in such a light rifle.

If you are looking for some good reading, head to MarlinOwners, and read all the threads on the .35 Remington Safari Grade...

The same guy did the same mods and load development for his .444 Marlin...Guy goes by FlatTop, and is more than happy to discuss his projects...

Here is only one thread:

I think it is too long to feed.

I found it was much easier to have my Marlin 30A 30-30 bored and chambered to 356 than to find another 35 Rem and have it rechambered and fit a new bolt?

I've considered a 35 Whelen conversion for a .30-06 but I like my 336 in .35 Rem just like it is. It does a fine job of launching a RD boolit just as fast as I want it to go.

All I've ever wanted as an improvement to the .35 Rem is a longer neck.

As the others have said, 35 Rem. is about as long a round you can feed a 336. I know some people have rechambered to .358 Win. but OAL limits of the action can sometimes limit performance to not much more than a 35 rem. anyway (especially with cast boolits). The 35 Rem. can push a cast 200+ grain boolit 2000 - 2200 fps with good accuracy. What else do you need from a cast boolit, or even a jacketed bullet for deer or black bear sized critters?
As to you second question, the 35 Rem. runs about 34,000 cup. The .358 and 35 Whelen run at 50,000+ cup. So, you have to be careful with even .358 loads.
IMHO, leave the Marlin as is and get one of the pump guns or a bolt gun with an action that is designed for 30-06 length cartridges and pressures.

The 336 action is good up to @45,000psi. After that you are definately in dangerous territory.

A Browning BLR would work for 35 Whelan however the same gun with the shorter action is already available in .358 Win.

My vote would be to leave it alone and shoot it.
