My daughter's boyfriend work's as a plumber's asst/apprentice, while they were working on a house, tearing out the cast iron stuff, he dug out and saved the solder for me. Good kid, smart move on his part. Would it be safe to say that this stuff is 50/50 ? He gave me about 20 lbs. Thanks to all.

That should be treated as pure lead IMHO. Gianni.

I was gona suggest that if you were getting lead out of your toilet you might consider makeing some changes to your diet, I was but it might be considered to be in poor taste so I wont.

Well, the way we look at it here in the south,is that if it don't taste good, then put salt on it till it does. But I do "guaroontee" I have a pretty crappy diet.No pun intended.

I occasionally buy lead from a plumbing supply house- it is pure lead in 20 pound ingots. I would assume any recovered stuff is the same.

Taylor, the 'solder' is pig lead used to pack cast iron joints . Process is:
* ... join the male and female joints
* ... pack the joints with oakum
* ... wrap joint with an asbestos rope
* ... Pour the lead into the joint
* ... Chink the lead with a flat end chisel
(Worked my way through college working with commercial plumbers. Packed a few miles during that time)

ASTM range of pig lead grades... 99.995 - 99.97 - 99.94 - 99.90

John Boy has been there and done that! He wouldn't know those steps and terminology otherwise.

(Off Topic) Taylor, I like your Latin maxim: Those of us with Classical inclinations may refer to ourselves as "plumbators" or, dare I say it, "plumbuphiles!" For my part, I am still trying to make a friendly acquaintance with a plumber. If only we were all so lucky!

Hmm...asbestos rope? Can you still buy that or is it too hazardous to handle?

I love the reaction from people that see my piles of lead ingots laying in my shop. You would think it was a pit of rattlesnakes and was going to grab them. Some women actually pull their shirt up to cover their nose and mouth.

No, they don't pull it that high.

There is an imitation asbestos product, I don't know what else to call it that can be used. The rope is not the danger as I am sure you are aware it is the friable particles in a wrap or loose pipe insulation that will get you. Gianni

I was being a smart a**, while I was still working I went through so many cases of lead paint and asbestos abatement and removal that I became sorta bitter about it all. Seems a whole lot of OSHA rules are a money pit for some and a gold mine for others.

Yea, I was sure that you had to sit through the same meetings I did/do. Gianni

454PB ... If you want the shirts to go higher you either need more lead in your stash or you need to stack it higher. It is well known that the normal female reacts best to a large visual stimulie.
