I bought a S&W 1905 the other day sn 173xxx and was wondering if anyone knew where I can find out a general date of manafacture. Any other info would be nice also. Smith wants 30 bucks for a letter, surely there's some free info out there with less details.

Ebner.
Roy Jinks' "History of Smith & Wesson" has a serial number chart on page 161 that indicates your 1905 to have been a 'Third Change' model, made in 1910-11 or so, assuming it's a 38.

Sounds like the Jinks book is a better buy than the letter--to me, anyway.

Thanx much for the info. Sounds like I need to buy a book, definatly a better buy than a 30 dollar letter.
