View Full Version : 7.62x39 dies - how does the die make it .310 or .308?

Rifle dies I know little or nothing about. When I size a pistol casing, it is sized one size.
The 7.62x39 can use either a .310/.311 boolit or a .308 boolit. How does the sizing die for that caliber select the correct neck for the boolit you want to load? Do you need to specify the neck size of the die ?? (thinking about Lee dies).

The decapping pin works double duty and acts a sizing punch to size the inside of the neck. The die pushes the neck smaller than the rod, and the rod when its pulled out brings the neck to the correct size.

There is nothing special about a rifle barrel, you need to size the projectile correctly for the bore.

ETA: If you need to make it smaller, you can turn down the rod to get the tension/diameter you need for your projectiles.

Some of the die sets come with two expander balls, one for .308 and one for .310

My die set came with a 308 and 311 expander. Loosen the collet, swap expander, tighten collet. Takes about 30 seconds. I believe I have lee dies for the 762x39 but I could be wrong. Have to go out in the garage and look.

The Sets come with different expander balls. This is the RCBS .308/.311 set.

The bushing sizer dies such as Redding use diff. sized bushings and no expander to give you a better choice of neck size and tension, this method is much smoother as the expander ball tends to drag, and possibly even stretch case necks on std. rifle dies.
