I use a cast iron dutch oven. My question is if I put a hardened steel spout in the wall or bottom do I have to worry about the different expansion rates of the different metals?

I would not do it. Cast iron is fragile enough without adding stress where the spout goes. The thought of a few pounds of molten alloy suddenly being released is ugly.

You will be better off not messing with trying to make a cast iron pot into a bottom pour. Use steel plate and well casing or a rim. Do a search for "bottom pour smelter" to get some good ideas.

A good welder who is used to working with castiron could do it either by welding or brazing a tube in ,however unless he is your brother-in- law or best buddy it will cost more than it is worth . I have brazed hundreds of cast iron water pump housings that broke from freezing and it was a steep learning curve, but now I can do it with 99.9% sucess

Something else to consider...... The bail handle tabs can't take the weight of any decent amount of lead, so chances are they'd break about mid-pour (velly velly bad!!!)

I would makle one from steel pipe, The cast iron won't handle the working stress . A lap full of lead is not worth the time messing with the pot.

Good for you. How will you control flow?
