OK, we ended up sending the 314-120 in just now, so this one will probably run 2 weeks late, I could have been strict on the cutoff date but I saw no point in that. This is not military school hehe

This order lagged a bit, so the checks will go in Friday, the order will go in 2 weeks after that.

Any last minute buyers get your checks to me by the 29th, from the 29th to Nov 12 if you get me a Money Order (not a check) you will be included

After that I cannot promise how many extras we can afford to order, IF there are any they will be $66.00.

The molds came in, and as usualy they are undersize, the test castings in WW with a bit of tin run .4525 to .4530. The drawing specified WW metal and .454 to .455 dia.

They are going to have to go back to Lee, I am going to call Doug and talk to him first and see if he can grease the wheels.

I have heard that insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting the results to be differant, and that is what we keep doing with LEE....from experience with 2 other buys I ALMOST talked myself into just adding .001 to the dia on the print...if I had done that tho they would have come in .456 I can almost garuantee it

Bill

PatMarlin

I'm wondering if maybe it's due to orders and communication down the line, as Chargar spoke on in another thread.

Something gets dropped along the way. I think it would be wise if we studied the 2 group buys recently, the 311407 and this one, and see if the magic formula for dealing with LEE is here.

Not to say you did anything wrong Bill, and I certainly appreciate all of your efforts, but Charles Chargar may have discovered the key in paper work, and if he has- we need to standardize it for the good of the group.

I really needed .455 on this mold, and nothing shy of .454, but I'm willing to wait, or sell it if I have to.

Thanks again Billbird... ;)

I am a toolmaker by trade, we send a blueprint, and Bob was even good enough to HIGHLIGHT the pertinent dimensions.

I have not heard of any of the designs coming back too BIG, unless it was a gross error in reading a print.

Bill-

If you incur any costs please pass it on. I would like to kick in some extra if you end up paying out of your own pocket for shipping or whatever costs you may incur while dealing with Lee.

Willbird
12-08-2005, 03:45 PM
I just talked to Doug, he said send them back to his attention and he would check them out, and if there is a problem he will make new ones, and that LEE will refund the shipping costs.

If anybody really wants a small one I have (30) total so I think I can send you a little one and not send it back with the others.

Bill

David R

I would take a small one, I only need .452. 454 is TOO big for me.

Thanks

The .45's I planned to use this in both (Ruger and Smith) run large in the throat. And I don't need a heavy boolit for my 1911A1. Hold their feet to the fire!

However, if they come back oversize, like .458, .459, or so, that's OK too.;)

Willbird
12-16-2005, 12:19 PM
OK the molds went back.........we'll see.

I told them I wanted a refund on my shipping in the form of a check, not a credit for more messed up LEE stuff :-)

Well I asked nicer than THAT hehe

272 to 273 grains from WW plus tin, about 20 to 1.

Nice mold, Nice looking Boolits. Can't wait till I can load them up and see how they shoot.

Just to make sure everything is clear, David and one other person elected to take the undersized molds "as is" all the other molds have went back to Lee to be re-made to the print.

One other groupie has said he would rather sell his mold so if somebody wants to take his place contact me and I will get an addy for you to send him a check.

I shot the 452.5 272 custom group buy mold boolit last night out of my Smith 25-5. It shoots great! Nice groups. Sorry, no measurments, but it shot as well as my 452460 which is hard to beat. I didn't have my Merrit Optical Miricle Vision aid, so the sights and target were blurry even at 50 feet.

The first thing I did is lower the rear site to its lowest position, then fired some groups. I loaded 6 and 7.5 grains of Promo (red dot). The six grain load was nice and fun to shoot. 7.5 was plenty and felt like a BIG gun. No signs of pressure, but all I really wanted in a 45 colt. Both loads shot little groups. This is a good boolit design and well worth having.

I'm glad I didn't get a 454 version, I size em to 451 and they shoot great out of my gun.

I've said it before,

Willbird, You DA MAN!

Guys. they came in Friday, I did not cast any yet, will tomorrow, it's been workworkwork since 1-1-06, good thing cause the property tax bill just came :-)

One thing I did notice is that the mold cavities are rough in the ogive area....sort of a torn finish like the tool was dull or the coolant concentration was a bit on the light side.

Will cast boolits and post pictures and dimensions tomorrow :-)

I haven't checked in in a while either, wondering where my mold was. Been crazy last few months (new boss).

I'm glad they came back, please cast some and let us know how they are. I'm in no hurry as I bought this mold in anticipation of using it in 5 years or so!!!!!

I really want to get into casting (I did it with my father many years ago) again as I have a few guns I could use it for.

The weight and dia are spot on this time, they dropped from the mold nicely.
