Can you shoot .22LR out of a .22Magnum rifle. Not a stupid question I hope.

Not safe. The case will rupture most likely.
22short, long and long rifle are ok however, just clean the chamber well so you dont stick a longer case in the fouling of the short stuff. Just like 38spl in a 357 .

I tried it and it worked but they case swelled up enough that I had to use a cleaning rod to get it out!

You should be able to shoot a .22 WRF out of a .22 RFM. No price advantage, and it may not function an autoloading action, but if you want some kind of sub-load, that's about the only possibility.

Thanks for the info. I thought they were both the same diameter cartridge, just the magnum was longer with more of a charge.

The Magnum is inside lubricated with the case bigger than the bullet, the .22 LR is an outside lubricated heel bullet with the case the same diameter as the bullet.
In my rifle the 40 gr. Win Magnum gives 2000 fps, the 45 gr. Win Dynapoint gives 1550 fps, and the 45 gr. Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) gives 1350 fps.
there are loads with 30 gr. bullets and 50 gr. bullets, but haven't chronographed them.
The above three loads group about the same, but the point of impact drops from one to the next, as you would suspect from the decreasing velocities.

This has little to do with the question but I just cant keep from sticking my generously proportioned nose in. I have two conversions from RF to CF. One is a Ruger single six that was 22 wmr and the other a contender barrel that also was 22 wmr. They are now 22 CCM and both work splendedly. The single six can now only fire CF unless I make a second bushing for RF but the TC can fire both CF and RF. In CF it is scarry accurate but in RF it is only fair. The differance is that in CF you can tune the load but in RF ya has ta take wut ya get. I did try and only once to fire a 22 LR in the TC and sure nuf it split, and looked like it was about to give birth. The 22 wmr is a good bit fatter than the 22 lr and the 22 ccm is fatter still. When 22 wmr's are fired in the 22 ccm chamber they are fatter than if fired in a 22 wmr chamber but do look normal. As an asside if no one has noticed I have a thing for the little 22 ccm. I have three, the two mentioned and one of the few made by Cooper Arms in Stevi MT. All are wonderfully accurate and at thier best with boolits just the way God intended.

IMHO the 22 WRF will usually outshoot all but the best/most expensive 22WMR rounds in most guns. Not sure why, but it seems to hold true.
