After over 50 years of shooting I bought Jack O'Connor's favorite caliber.
a .270 Winchester.
There it was, sitting on the rack at a local gunshop, the bluing worn off, the Fajen California walnut stock with an oil finish showing ripples and whorls under a neglected oil finish. No major dents in it and one spot with small dents that can be raised with steam, then sanded out. A home gunsmith had taken off the plastic butt plate and replaced it with a shotgun recoil pad. That was done so long ago that the rubber in the recoil pad was hard and starting to crack.
But I knew who had made the gun and it's early history. And I knew that the original butt plate had Globco Golden State Arms on it.
But best of all the bore was pristine. A shot of spray klean on a patch and a few seconds of air to dry it showed a mirror like bore with sharp rifling.

The barreled action on this rifle was made in Spain by Empresa Nacional Santa Barbara de Industrias Militares. The stock by Fajen, and the two were married in Cafornia to a Fajen walnut stock, possibly by Fajen.

The factory in La Corona that built the Mauser 98 action was started with aid from Germany in the mid 1930s and was closely linked with Oberndorf who ran the factory for years. Despite what folks say about Spanish metallurgy - the steel in these guns comes from the same suppliers that FN and all of other European rifle makers use - In all my years of trading firearms I have never seen one that had worn out or failed. P.O. Ackley used these actions in his custom rifles and if Mr. Ackley thought them good enough for his custom guns, they are good enough for me.

The price was right - $300.00. A Fajen walnut stock with that grain would sell for 2/3 of that.

So today I will get dies and a mold and a lee sizer.

I like the 270. I find it to be a very versatile cartridge where I am, and actually plan to get another one in the future. Good score and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come!!

I feel your pain, but you're under the Canadian social medicine plan--so finding a doc and requesting it to be done isn't an option?

Down here, my orthoghoul salivates every time I walk into his examining room. Two knee replacements, hip replacement and shoulder replacement are on the agenda sometime in the next few years. He keeps telling me I better hurry up and have it done before Obamacare completely kicks in.

I'm with Love Life and the Perfessor--I like the .270 round a lot. I'm a solid 30-06 man, but have reloaded almost as many .270 rounds for a few old hunting friends as I have 30-06. Maybe my imagination, but it seems the .270 has a bit flatter projectory, which I also like because I prefer neck shots on the smaller whitetails down here in Texas. Easier to do at distance not having to figure in as much rise or drop based on the range you're shooting.

Sounds like you got one fine deal. Congrats! :drinks:

The doctor I went to was honest and blunt about the risks and outcome. After hearing all of the options I decided that maybe I should wait. This doctor was willing to do the operation, however he did tell me to talk to folks who have had a knee replacement. Currently I can get away with more activities than I would be left with without the surgery. I weighted the risks and the outcome, and decided to put it off. Something goes wrong in the surgery or recovery, and I may well be worse off than I am now.

The pills comment is a variation of an old joke - "take two aspirin and call me in the morning:" This doc. suggested a medication that may help considerably - taken daily. Just anti inflamatories but If I can get 2-3 years on my knee with minimal pain that works for me.

Photos of the gun later...
and maybe as a bonus I will add the Krag and my dad's commercial mauser from the 1950s

I shattered my left knee Tibial Plateau in `85. It was reconstructed with 3 SS screws and a 4" SS pin holding things together. Fast forward to `03. I finally had worn out the cartalidge on that knee and was walking "bone on bone" as they say. I retired that Oct. 1st and on the 7th I had the knee totally replaced as a retirement gift to myself. I wished I had had it done alot sooner than I did.

The .270 is a very nice cartridge and your new baby will impress you once you put some new "clothes" on her as finish and recoil pad could be called. I found a good make 130 Gr. "J" bullet will take about anything you will want to encounter that doesn`t eat flesh also. Mr. O`Conner really had an affair with this round and used it all over the world on animals that were far larger than should be taken with this "tiny" cartridge as some "experts" called it.Robert
