A good Keith style SWC is a good choice in either. The H&G 503 and the H&G 251 are good ones and have been accurate for me.

looking at the 503 its in the 290 gr and 250 gr what weight are you using, couldnt find any info on the 251, i was thinking about a seaco #432 i have cast this for years my 629 c dx loves that bullet ,

have only taken one european boar 280# used a home cast .41 255gr. LWNGC in my redhawk mz was 1300 bullets-- gave complete pass through- at 40 steps to 20 steps-- I shot at the animal above me on a bluff --I hit the bluff before I hit the boar- I tracked for about 40 minutes he left a distinct track with some blood-- his long hair absorbed the blood so not much trail- jumped him and shot him high behind the shoulder --he is down now and can not move-- at 20 steps or so on shot behind the right ribs and out the front of the chest-- he gave bellow and was pretty well gone -- I am sure a Keith with a good meplat will work .270-.30 - as will .320 my Mountain mold has a .331nd it left 1+'' holes - all three shots were pass thorughs-- still it would have been better not to shoot the mountain:8-) at the first
230 gr and up should do the deed - unless it is like 450-500 lbs then will shoot em in the ear
load at least full factory -- here is what I have used 22.5 /296 240 LBT LWNGC .320
235+gr Keith Saeco 411 /23022.5gr H110/296-.270+ meplat. 255 gr 20,21 gr H110,/296 --this is what I have used and tested -not recomending them but in my Redhawk, DWA, Blackhawk they are good

I killed a pig once.

Any of your choices pretty much are fine. I dont prefer hp's for boar, so take that into consideration. 41 and 44 mags are some of my favorites, but you dont need to run them ultra fast or hard. A medium hardness slug doing just over 1k will kill as well as anything. Hitting them right trumps all the speed you can miss them with. Cast your slugs to around 12 to 14 bhn and run them to 1K fps and enjoy!

I killed a pig once......lol.

Pretty much any flat profile 41 or 44 mid range load will do the job. As always, pick your shot.

If we have to start killing them more than once I'm gonna look into that zombie ammo I saw awhile back.
Big slow chunks of lead that stay together and have a decent frontal area seem to work best. I prefer a medium to large caliber levergun but a Keith or RDO boolit from a revolver should work fine, just avoid the forehead shots. Poor shot placement or less-than-sturdy boolits can make things interesting or frustrating, depends on which way they decide to run.

Mine is the 250 gr SWC. The 251 is a .41 SWC about 220 gr.

Lemme tell ya, I enjoy that more than anything. People you like (friends) and people you love (family) having some friendly competition going on. You want to learn how to shoot? Give a friendly competition a try. I never learned to shoot long range (50 yards plus) without my friend Lee. And he schooled me more than once. Iffn Im gonna lose to someone, let me at least like em. Otherwise Im just gonna go crazy(er).

I married a pig once!! I've also killed a few. I agree fully on the flat nose design at 1000+ fps

I wouldn't have a problem with any SWC or WFN at 1200 - 1400+ fps with either cartridge (240+ gr for the .44 & 210+ gr for the .41.). However, in the .44 magnum I prefer the 429640HP (mine is 270 gr fully dressed) over a safe max load of H110. In the .41 Magnum I use the 210 gr RCBS SWC HP'd with the Forster 1/8" HP tool over a max load of 2400. Both bullets are cast of a softer malleable alloy that offers good expansion and weight retention with most often giving through and through for penetration. I use 6 to 7 1/2" barreled revolvers for hunting so the velocities are in the 1350 - 1450 fps range.

I too have killed a pig once.....dated a couple also (alcohol was involved) but didn't kill them though I thought of killing myself the morning after to keep from embarrasing my dog...........never married one though........I am older and smarter now, or at least I like to think so.........

What are the opinions of others here on the suitability of a subsonic (about 1000fps) roughly 200 to 250 grain cast boolit from a 300 blackout for pigs?

x101airborne
03-13-2013, 01:23 PM
I did it and I dont care for it. A sub load just does not do enough to the animal to give it a quick death and I dont like going into thick brush to follow up a hog. I am a far cry from Peter Capstick.

Thanks Airborne, that's pretty much what I figured. Just looking for confirmation.

Now not to say impossible, especially if you can get head shots. I just get the heeby jeebies hearing that hog thrashing around in the brush after being shot knowing that I am about to INTENTIONALLY go in after it.
I think I would rather (insert something insane and painful here).

Personally for me-- heavier bullets in either cal like 265-280 in the .41 and 300 or there abouts in the .44 at moderate speed are likely ok -- but I like the heavier loaded 6 gun just for fun ___ I have a .41/454 ;)
and second shot place ment is everything-- my first hog would have gone diferently had that bluff not jumped in the way -3rd I like the idea of too much is about right at least to point- I want my boolit to impact at about 1200 fps in the .41 and higher in my TC and .410 -- when the boolit goes below the speed of sound -1150 - I am shooting too far-- pigs are normally close anyway --just me

x101---ONCE???
More like one at a time.
We need to start a thread to document how many at once, and/or how many with one shot.
Most of the cast loads mentioned, proportionatly loaded in to .41mag .44 mag, or .45 colt will have full pass through both pig shoulders and whack anything standing behind.
I've managed a 2fer1 with a 30-30 Saeco 165, and would think most others could too with patience.
A 45/70 400-500 grainer from a Sharps or Rolling Block or Ruger #1 would be a hoot.... I'm betting four medium sized piggies could taken, but we'll see.
I've been trying to get a whole sounder lined up at a one sided corn trough, but without good timing just yet.
Of course your Ma Duece just might work too.

When I met RanchDog a couple years ago, If I remember correctly he said his father or father in law had killed I think 9 or so using a 45-70 or a 450 marlin. Put out corn in a straight line and wait for the shot. This is my plan for the 50 BMG one day.

His pig killer of choice at the moment is his 290 gr 45 Colt bullet from model Rossi 92 with a Scout scope. He has sure killed a lot of them on his land. I've tried them myself and they will do a black bear also and most anything between the two.

I tried a 429421 out on a pig. It was too hard (straight linotype, 255 grains) and going too fast, exiting apparently intact and without expansion, judged by the exit hole size, after 18" of penetration entering the right shoulder and exiting at the front of the left ham. MV was 1600 fps according to the chronograph- a Ruger and Contender only load. A milder load and a much softer boolit would have worked just fine and not been nearly as painful to me.

The Piggly Quigley . When they are writhing about for that last few moments , you could call that the Quigley Piggly Wiggly .

It's a good thing pig killing is so much fun, we need to do a lot more of it! I wish I didn't feel I had to put every edible pig I shoot in the freezer. Last time out I filled up my cooler first day and lost interest. I shot one "population control" hog a day or so later and it just didn't feel right. I prefer nice young piggies over venison for table fare but I can only manage 100 of so lbs of processed meat/yr, even after giving some away.
I guess I need to head south for a bit of de-sensitizing. I'll waste a hog now and then, just haven't figured out a way to enjoy it.

i killed a hog last week with a 41. I used a cast performance 250 WFN style over H110. Pig was down in 15 yds. Good luck on your hunt
