FWIW, I found a finish remover at WalMart that really works great. It's called "Dads Easy Spray" paint and varnish remover. Comes with a spray bottle applicator. I tried it on a rifle stock that someone mopped on an extra thick coat of what appears to be poly varnish. Sprayed it on and within seconds, it started to boil up the old finish. Scraped off the first application and gunk, sprayed on a second coat and within a couple minutes the old finish was gone down to the bare wood. I just scraped off the excess and then wiped it down with a rag. I've tried other finish removers in the past, but nothing worked as well as this stuff.

I also did a set of S&W N frame grips today with this stuff. Took less than fifteen minutes to strip them. Best is it a great job on those big, deep checkered panels that are really hard to clean up without a lot of work ordinarily.:-D
