Where to buy Lanolin

Where is the best place to but Lanolin? Is it sold under that name or look for something else? Thanks for any help. Is there a difference in Lanolin and Anhydrous(spelling ?) Lanolin?

Lanolin is a light yellow soft matterial. Anhydrous lanolin is very stiff dark yellow. I believe you will want the anhydrous for making a lube. you can find it at a pharmacy. They may have to order it for you. The old small pharmacys are more help w/ this if you can find one.

Yep, the soap maker supply shops are the easiest source. I bought my pound at Select Oils online but they seem to have gone belly up.

I bought an 8 oz jar at an organic food store in our town called New Leaf Market.

Before that, I used a compound for "pressing hair" I found at Grocery Outlet and used that to make my Felix-Lube. My boolits smell like a barber shop. It worked great by the way.

Hi, Just do a search on eBay and you should find many dealers offering it. Different sizes, different prices. A lot of them have it in their eBay stores. What you probably want is anhydrous lanolin, look for the USP (United States Pharmacopeia). It is used in soap making, skin lotions and of course, Ed's Red, my favorite gun cleaner. A drug store might still have it but price might be out of sight.

I would try ships chandlers, thats where I get mine from, trade name Lancote. They use it for protecting propellers and such like. This is the cheapest source of anhydrous lanolin I've found and they sell it in usefull amounts.

They also sell excellent beef tallow.

A roll or two of oakum is worth getting, or tow as we call it, cheap and excellent for most gun cleaning.

My Walmart did not carry the lanolin,but ordered it for me.He told me it would be about 12 bucks for a pound ,it was over 30 when it came in,had too back out.It is still on the self,waiting for mark downs.

The stuff I use know as "tow" has been the traditonal gun cleaning medium in the Highlands for years my father used it it and his dad too so well over 130 years.

It comes in a roll (untreated) around 4" wide and 1" thick, you just pull some off the roll and wrap it around the jag and go at it with your favourite cleaner.

Also use as a rag for wiping down, general cleaning etc. also really good for shiny up a nice oil finished stock.
