Well I finally got a chance to try them today. I used a 210 Federal large rifle primer and 15 grains of HS6 under a 400 grain LFN. At 50 yards there was a little improvement. At 100 yards it cut my normal groups by about a 3rd. Where it really shined was when I was shooting up the last of my ammo. I was shooting at my 300 yard rock and there was a huge difference in accuracy. The loads with the rifle primers shot really nice groups. Anyone else ever mess with rifle primers in the Linebaughs or similar cases like the 500 JRH?

I haven't tried them. That's interesting. Any group pics?

When I first bought my .475 I contacted powder people and they told me "NO" rifle primers. Same with the JRH.
But I use 296 so what you are doing with HS-6 is gaining some velocity without increasing the powder charge.
Remember a LR primer can generate 4000 PSI by itself. That much can push a boolit way into the rifling and with a slow powder, done before good ignition.
HS-6 loads are not long range loads but will do 1" or less at 50 yards with a LP mag primer. There is not enough velocity or spin for long range.
I can't suggest the LR primer.

You need to convince my 475's and 500 WE that HS6 is not a longrange powder!! They didn't get the memo!! Hodgdons data for the 500 WE uses Federal 210 rifle primers. Being as the 500 WE and 500 JRH are just about ballistic twins I am planning on trying them in my 500 JRH when its done.

Myself, I didn't see any difference between WLP's and CCI BR2. Here's some Ohler 33 chronograph comparisons with the 500 JRH from a 6" barrel.

440 grain with 30.0 grains of H110 gave me 1,368fps with the CCI and 1,356 with the WLP
440 grain with 23.0 grains of IMR4227 gave me 1,050fps with the CCI and 947 with the WLP
440 grain with 33.3 grains of VV N120 gave me 1,317fps with the CCI and 1,291 with the WLP

I saw about the same difference in the 500 S&W using the CCI and WLP, as I use the WLP in my 500S&W also.

It is not, it is like a light load in any revolver. It comes to your definition of long range.
My .475 BFR with a 420 gr WFN, after one ranging shot hit a 6" swinger the next 4 shots at 400 yards. LP mag, Fed 155 and 26 gr of 296 for 1329.1 FPS.
I was told to NOT use a rifle primer because of pressure spikes and even the .500 S&W will work with a LP mag.
I have never seen a primer recommendation on the Hodgdon site.
You can do what you want but I am not comfortable with the wrong primer.
My JRH has done down to 1/2" at 100 yards with a Fed 155.
The worst thing I have ever done to get in trouble on sites is to ask for proof of groups. Sorry, I will not ask you.
Understand many cartridges use the wrong primer, like the .454.
