I took my 500 s&w out along with my Sig c3 to shoot at a steel plate this morning. This is a 3/8 plate I got off eBay and just hangs on a heavy duty shepherds hook. The 45 rang it swung it as expected but, having never shot it with the 500 I wasn't sure what to expect. I hit it all 5 times but, after each shot, I had to walk up and rehang the plate. When hit, it would rock and swing so hard it slid up the hoop and fell down the shaft of the shepherds hook. I was impressed but, now I gotta put some kind of stop on the shaft so I don't have to walk up and fix it after each shot.

Revolvers are terrible on what I hang. I have broken heavy chain and sheared aircraft bolts.
Even a .44 turned a 3/8" steel ram into a salad bowl at 200 meters. I tried to beat it flat with a big sledge and the only thing that works is to shoot it on the other side.
I have made 1/2" targets that take hits but the big guns swing them so hard stuff breaks.

I am making some targets at work for shooting with my .308 at long distance. Mild steel is no good. I'm using 3/8" AR-400 plate. Much tougher.

Unfortunately, my steel shooting is limited to friends campground during their closed season. Very few outdoor ranges around here allow shooting anything but, paper. Liability issues I suppose but, it gets quite boring. Every once in a while, one will have bowling pin shoot. It's unfortunate cause I think they are missing out on a great opportunity to attract more shooters.

I shot a 1" thick 8" round plate at 25 yrds on a 3' arm with a 325 gr jhp 1100 fps 500 BFR and turned it to a spinner . put a crater in the face of the plate .

They truly add meaning to "reactive targets".
