OK, with the million years combined knowledge on this list hopefully someone can give me a little more info on this one.

http://s77.beta.photobucket.com/user/Yance_2006/library/Manlicher%20pre-war

All I know is it's a very early Manlicher sporting rifle, and a pretty nice one before someone decided it needed a re-blue and stock refinish.

Any help is greatly appreciated and I'll pass on any info to the rifle's owner.

While the action is Mannlicher-derived, IMO the rifle's one of the European (usually German or Austrian - probably around Suhl ) sporting rifles, built by small/independent gunmakers around the turn of the 20th Century.

It looks like it's lacking the Schoenauer internal rotary magazine - so probably a Haenal action.

The clues are the gold "Hubertus" receiver ring inlay ( honoring the God of the Hunt), the half-round ILO M-S spoon bolt handle, and the Greener-type side safety, also seen on some Merkel's.
The panels alongside the action are there to lend some strength to an otherwise minimal stock - appropriate for a European Stalking Rifle.

The chambering's marked, of course, in 6.5x54MS - the same as the 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, so one could presume the rifle was built sometime after that date.

Here'a a link to a similar, but less fancy, rifle - chambered in 8x57:

Claw-mount rings can be supplied & fitted (Originals are like hen's teeth, and replacements MUST be individually fitted) to the rifle's bases by New England Custom Gun (google) - they're fairly pricey, but considering the work & complication, worth it.

pietro;

Thank you very much for getting me pointed in the right direction.

Every Mannlicher I've seen has the rotary magazine and I was wondering why this one had a single stack, now I know.

Since I now know what to look for I see that there is lots of info available.

Again, thanks for the information and direction.

IMO, it's a pretty nice rifle in a very usable chambering, with a lot of fine handiwork extant - if it was mine, I believe I'd go to the trouble to fit (or have fitted) a set of claw mount rings to those bases.

If it were mine I probably would. It belongs to an acquaintance who thought I might could tell him something about it. Looking at information available there's a wide "ballpark" range of values so I won't even make an offer. Depending on what he decides it may wind up on GB and we'll see where it goes.

Thanks again for your help.

Hubertus is actually Saint Hubertus...not a god...the saint of hunters
