Has anyone with a single-shot chambered in .30-30 ever used the 311299 boolit? I will be ordering a barrel for my Stevens 44 1/2 in .30-30 and wondered if I could get away with using this heavyweight the .30-30? What do you think? Would make a pretty sweet thumper if I could get away with it!

Or should I just invest in a 311041 or 311291 and be happy with the RN profile?

No reason it wouldn't work just fine so long as you have the right twist to stabilize it... So far - it shoots just fine in 1:10 twist... I haven't tried it with slower twists...

Just be sure you slug that bore before you order a die... Don't want to find out that you gotta get a custom tight-nose die *After* you own the die...

Thanks

Right now I have a .311" die for my .30s, but I can get a different one. The bore will be a Douglas Premium XX blank and I'd imagine I can order the twist however I want.

I'm thinking Truckjohn is referring to a mold as a "die"? I've noticed this in a couple of his posts. Not sure, but seems so?

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. :) I've already got the 311299 mold - as well as a Lee 200 gr. .30 cal and a 6 cav Ranch Dog 165 RF.

The 30-30 will handle any conventional .30 caliber boolit design assuming the barrel's rate of twist is 1:10".

Gosh, if you already have the Ranch Dog 165, what is the need for anything else? I wish I would have gotten one when they were available.

In a single-shot rifle I can take advantage of the better ballistics of the 311299.

My old Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has an article by Frank Marshall about using the Lyman 311284 in a Savage bolt action .30-30. Not sure offhand what the twist was but he recommended the heavy boolit.

They run about the same weight (I think 311284 is around 210 grs. and 311299 is just over 200) so if the twist is fast enough you should be good.

longbow - funny story. I just picked that handbook up as I was pondering life on "the throne" and found the same article. 1-10" twist, but he said both his 1-10" twist and 1-12" twist barrels stabilized the 311284 at 1500 fps, but the 1-12" may not if it's cold out, but that was speculation. In any case, I'll be getting the 1-10" twist barrel.

I have singles shots in 14, 13 and 12 twist. The 14 twist will stabilize a 1.21 (210 gr) long bullet at 1400 fps. I found no limits on my 12 twist rifle (HW 30/40). A 10 twist is to fast, unless you want to shoot 250 gr bullets sub sonic.

Thanks Frank. I'm kinda shooting in the dark there, I hadn't considered that a 210 gr. 311299 is considerably shorter than a 200 gr. jacketed bullet. I see you're over at ASSRA - I just joined and look forward to learning from ya'll over there as well!

And by "too fast" do you mean I run the risk of a cast boolit skidding across the lands? Or is it the dreaded "overstabilization", which doesn't concern me a whole lot, quite honestly.

Thanks for providing the information on the 12' and 14" twist rates; I'd been wondering about what they would stabilize and at what velocity for quite a while.

It's more overstabilazation than anything else. If you plan to shoot velocity's over 2000 fps, it can effect accuracy and it's possible to "skid" over the rifling with a soft 2 band bore rider in that velocity range.

NOE's got a pretty good copy. I'm only telling you this because mine is already shipped . . . .

Longbow, so what data was listed for the 311284 in the bolt gun ? I'm looking for data I can "play with" loading the 311299,311365 and 311-247 ACC bullet in my 14" Contender.
PM me if you don't want to list the data in open forum
