Hi everyone.

Just thought I'd post some copies of instructions for the various Lee Loader kits I have. Seems there is always people looking for them since it is common for these kits to be picked up second hand and they often are missing the papers.

Edit: Just realized that I didn't resize the pic's. Usually photobucket does it automatically but maybe that's only with the bulk uploader? Sure does make it easier to read these though. Mods, I'll understand if they need to be resized but any chance they could stay as is? Might make a good sticky as much as the Lee kits get talked about here.

Anyway, I'll start with the Zero Error Target model and probably come back and edit this first post to add more pic's as I get them uploaded.

Okay, next up is the standard kit instruction set. It's 6 pages long since it's in a different tri-fold format. I wasn't able to copy two pages at once and keep them in proper order, so it's one at a time.

Always meant to get a few of those Target Model kits when they were being made, wish I had for old times sake.
Still have a few of the standard $9.95 reloaders from back in the 60's.

Well, can't put more than 10 images per post so I need to start a second one for the rest.

Now for the Shotgun kit instructions.

I'm not sure if I've got instructions for the "improved" or "unitized" kits but I've got both types of kits so I'll have to look.

The Lee Loader is how I got into reloading with my .38spl. Although I never sent off a primer with the loader, I did get a hand primer as using a mallet to seat them made me queasy.

Thanks for the memories Dave. That's how I began reloading.

Not a stickie - e-mail them to Wiljen to be put on castpics. There they can be downloaded or printed easily

Thanks Dave! The Lee Loaders always bring on a wave of nostalgia, as it's what Dad and I started on in the mid '80's. After all this time in the game, I never knew there were target and shotgun versions of this system - very cool! Musta been before my time.

Every now and then, I'll make a few rounds on one to feed that nostalgia. That feeling lasts about 5-10 rounds and is all I need for the next 5-10 years. Much like Jurassic Park's resurrection of dinosaurs, just because you CAN make ammo on one of these things doesn't necessarily mean that you SHOULD. . .but I'll print your instructions out all the same. One never knows what the gun shows, pawn shops, and yard sales will bring.:veryconfu

My first was also the Lee loader in 38 special. I was in the reloading shop buying more primers when I told the owner how, when seating primers, every 3rd or 4th would go off and I wish I could get more loads from a package of primers and it was a bit nerve racking too. He said that's not right , bring it back and let me look at it. Turns out there was a tiny teat (bump ) on the seat of the primer seater, just enough to occasionally set off a primer. He took a file, removed the teat, and reloading was a lot less nerve racking after that....not knowing any better I thought it was something I was doing to make them primers go off.

Thanks for posting that...brings back a lot of good memories of the times when reloading was a lot simpler and cheaper.

Just noticed, in the shotgun instructions, the pictures are out of sequence. To see them properly, you would need to print the sheets out and say them side by side. The instruction sequence would go left to right across the top half of each page then pick up going across the bottom. The way I copied these, they don't read correctly. Or, just look at the step number on each picture and go by that.

Does any one have the charge sheets for the 12 Ga version of this loader? I would like to get a copy for the one with the metal powder dipper.

Have Fun,

Just how many of those do you have?

Dave Bulla
11-20-2013, 03:41 AM
Who me?

Not sure off the top of my head but let me think...

I've got:

44 mag
357 mag
223
7mm mag
8x57mm
30-30 "improved" version
32 special
32-20 regular
32-20 unitized
45-70
410 in 2.5"
410 in 3"
20 gauge
16 gauge
12 gauge
270 zero error target
7mm mag zero error target
30.06 zero error target
30-30 zero error target

Maybe one or two others but I'd have to go look.

I guess you might say that I'm a bit hooked on the darned things but they really do load good ammo if you are reasonably careful in your steps. I weigh every charge on a scale and check the COL when I'm done. About the only step that is "iffy" is the crimp as it's somewhat easy to get an uneven crimp. I came up with a fix for that though that uses a home made plastic bushing/spacer and then it gives a perfect crimp every time.

elgefeoz,

You are probably already aware but I'll say it anyhow. Use the vintage charge tables with care in both rifle and shotgun cases. Powders have changed in both rifle and shotgun flavors and in shotgun ammo, components have changed drastically. More than likely in the charge table above, the "plastic" overpowder wad they assume you will be using is not made any longer. Back then many of them were not like modern wads with shot cups and cushioned bases. Many were simply a gasket seal like the old Alcan wads. These kits will still load modern ammo with modern components but you need to use the modern data, not the old data unless you have vintage components to go with it.

Thanks for the heads up ,Dave.
I plan to use modern stuff when I start with the 12 GA. the others - I use home made dippers and loads from established sources. The data charts were to print out and keep in the kits to maintain the ' vintage ' continuity.

Or you could just read the pertinent sections of Richard Lee's Modern Reloading Manual (1st Edition) on the internet archive.
(I post this believing that copyright has been strictly adhered to by the Internet Archive.)

Personally think that everyone should learn Reloading ammunition by starting with a Lee Loader. What it does for you is makes every step completely understandable. Understanding what you are doing is the key to success. It is also the key to safety.

When you consider that the Lee Loader tool is essentially a cheaper version of Wilson Reloading tools used by Benchrest Shooters, and the ammunition you can produce with it is very good indeed, I feel that the only disadvantage one would face with the tool is the speed at which you can produce good ammunition.

For an individual that is only loading for his hunting use, I see no reason to go any deeper into reloading tools. Even if he is loading for a few different calibers you can still load 50 rounds an hour without too many problems. By simply adding a powder scale and a few other simple tools, you can do everything the more equipped person can do, and still keep everything in a small box out of the way. You could go Hog Wild and get one of the cool little arbor presses and really go first class.

I only got into a Rockchucker press when I started shooting more pistol rounds and had to up my production. However now I know I could easily increase that production with the Lee tool by using some techniques I picked up for using the press. IE: Cycling all of the cases thru each step, rather than completing each round one at a time.

Now I have Dillon's and other machines, but I don't make ammo that is really any better, I just make it faster.
