I have several old, original top break S&W's in .38 S&W and I load accordingly due to their low strength actions. I have an old 8 cavity 146 grain RN mould specifically for the .38 S&W cartridge and I load them over 1.5 grains of Bullseye. These loads are very light, but again I'm shooting them in OLD top breaks!

For a victory model S&W, I used to load 2.4 grains of RED Dot with a 158 grain RN boolit. Shot close to point of aim, but I never chronographed it. For my old Top Break, I load 1.7 grains of Red Dot with a 148 grain wadcutter boolit seated out to 1.2 inches. Do not load more deeply or pressures will rise.
For a strong, "modern" gun, (solid frame,of post-WW II manufacture), My Speer manual shows 3.0 grains Red Dot as the starting load for 125 grain soft points, with 3.3 grains top end .

Speer 125 grain bullets
powder start wt max
Unique 4.5grns 4.8
sr4756 4.2grns 4.5
sr7625 3.2grns 3.5
all loads are shown in the 770-850 fps range from a 4 inch S&W model 33.

Lyman 358-242 121 grain RNL
SR7625 2.7grns 3.5
RED DOT 2.4grns 3.2
UNIQUE 3.5grns 4.5
VELOCITIES RUN 600-940 FPS FROM 4 INCH TEST BARREL

I have had GREAT luck loading the Remington 148 gr. HBWC (designed for the .38 Special) in the .38 S&W. This boolit is about .360" from the factory, and the hollow base will obturate even further. I've had good luck using about 2.0 to 2.5 (depending on the age and condition of the .38 S&W revolver) grains of Bullseye. The bullet will stick out of the case, and there is a groove where you can crimp it.
