this rifle came into my friends possesion from his great uncle who died many years ago,

he is not really interested in keeping it and shooting it,
he is interested in learning some history about this rifle and its value
the rifle is chambered in 38-55 winchester.

i will let the pictures do the rest of the talking

It looks like you have a Ballard No 4 Perfection Rifle with double set triggers or a No 8 Union Hill rifle. All Ballard rifles are higley colectable and this rifle is defintly a good one.Prices for target rifle is higly varible ,depending a lot an bore condition, very hard to put a value on it without seeing it,but even if the bore is stuffed the price is not going to be lowe

Looks like a nice old Ballard mid range.

It looks like either a Ballard #6-1/2 "Off-Hand" rifle or maybe a Ballard #8 "Union Hill" rifle. Very classy. Probably go for around 2 large, depending on bore and presence of original parts.

If he ever decides to sell the ballard I will take it. I have always wanted one.
