ok i have a no 4 mk 1, marked us property, english proof marked on the muzzle end of the bbl.

two questions: one who made it ?? "S" under the ser number(17cxxxx),1942,"flame bomb" ,F R on buttstock, 300/600 peep sight."dmp' or 'bmp" in top of recvr......aluminum butt plate .not much else.

two.....its got a 2 groove bbl......original ?

Congratulations Mike,
you have a "Savage" Rifle No. 4Mk.1 - a fine battle rifle.
Two groove rifling is original to Savage built rifles.

well since you brought it up,
this is a no 4 mk 1,
i also picked up a no 4 mk 2 at the same time, but much better shape,
have an indian enfield in 7.62(308)...thats a 2a1
an a no1 mk 3........

I think I've only sold one Enfield my whole life ,...... and that's when I was a teenager and knew everything . [smilie=1: I still have the second Enfield I ever bought even though it has a huge groove diameter , I can almost use 32 WCF bullets in it :roll:
I like the number four models and perhaps the mkII even though the Savage has a "cool" factor for me .

The square S stamp is the Savage manufacture stamp
I have a '43 Savage No4Mk1* amongst 6 other Enfields in the rack.

Is it stamped Mk1 or Mk1* ?
There is a difference between the two in bolt removal method and rarity.
2 groove barrels are common and show no difference in accuracy with the 5 groove barrels.

BUT THE ONLY "S" IS ON THE GRIP METAL(below the ser #), NO SERIAL ON THE RECVR,, no s on the recvr.

Not having the square S in certain places is also common .
The S could also be small on any part of the rifle and be inside a box.
Serial numbers should be on the butt/receiver ring , back of the bolt handle and on the barrel under the rear handguard.
Your serial number with the letter C in it also tells us it's a Savage. All Savage made No4 rifles had the C in the serial number.
The buttplate is also Zamac ( potmetal)
The FR on the buttstock is likely for "Field Repair" but it also could be for a repair at the Ishapore factory in India .
Is there a screw that goes through the forestock about 6" ahead of the magazine well ?
Is there any other stamps on the bottom side of the buttstock , close to the trigger or near the muzzle?

The serial number also tells us that your rifle was the 17x,xxxth rifle made out of 1.2million that Savage/Stevens pounded out in just 4 yrs .
Most Savage rifles will have " U.S. PROPERTY " stamped on the receiver as well .
The "FR" stamp on the butt , ( IMPO ) is likely for field repair .
Nothing wrong with that , it also adds history to a fine rifle.

I have a Savage and am looking at a guy on the East Coast that offers them converted to 45-70. I have a bear hunt in Alaska a year from now and I really like the rifle and action especially when hunting those critters that can eat you (a reason I don't swim in the ocean, sharks).

The Shotgun News ad was in the mid $300's this last spring, I just need to save a few bucks and have my dealer order one before next summer so I can cast up a few heavy bullets and develop a good loan for Bruins.

Gibbs Rifle Co. offered their Enfield conversion to 45-70. The magazine works and feeds on mine just fine. Built on the No.1 MkIII action with which you can find one of the Lyman steel receiver sights to put on it. Find one and buy it, you won't regret it!

Mike - this a late reply as I only joined in November 2007, but a passing note on "FR or FTR" markings. According to Charles R. Suttons terrific book, British Enfield Rifles, Vol. 2., No. 4 & 5 Rifles (North Cape Publications) a For Collectors Only Series, the marking FTR stands for Factory Thorough Repair and indicates a very comprehensive refurbishment tour thru one of the approved arsenals. Just my 2 cents worth!

I have a 1948 No. 4 Mark I and a NIB 1955 No. 4 Mark II, both with brass butt-palates and they are not only point of aim accurate, but are impressive "rock busters" in the California deserts with 174 and 180 grain bullets (the nasty J-word kind). Enfields have always been scorned by the ignorant for their rainbow trajectory. What the scorners don't realize is they arrive with punch of a Government Mule kick!
