Been away from casting for a long time now.

Thinking of try some cast boolets in my 308
with 30 inch barrel-1/10 twist..So which would
you all suggest I use as far as weight/ I was
thinking 170 grain or so..And which powder to
use as well.I have some trail boss on hand..
And I guess a gas check should be used..
My biggest fear is leading the barrel..So
please feel free to advice me here if you can.
Thank you very much..John PS====
I will be buying them already made as I no
longer have any casting equiptment...

I have 4 rifles in .308 Winchester caliber and selected RCBS 165 SIL to use in them. The body of the bullet fits into the short neck of the bullet. Accuracy from this bullet is as good or better than the dozen or so designs I have tried in these rifles.

Don't believe there is any such thing as best. Depends on your rifle, what you want to use it for, how much you are willing to pay for boolits etc. That said, probably cant go wrong with any of the recommendations given, and settle for what shoots best for you.

Paper punching, steel shooting, or hunting?

My choice for a plinker would be something that resembles the 115 grain Lee Soupcan.

Paper or steel would be what I got as a consensus among shooters here.

Hunting ( though I have yet to get to use a boolit hunting) would be whatever resembles the Ranch Dog 165s.

They shoot accurately where I have tried them and blow up my test medium (1 gallon jugs of water) with authority.
I don't know how water jugs compare to flesh targets, I compare the water spray and damage to the jug as a relative issue to bullets known to perform on game.

Saeco (or NOE) #315 is kinda considered the most accurate of all if the dia. matches your barrel and you work on the best seating depth. My .308 works good with this bullet and Varget.

What are your recipes with the powders mentioned? Any idea what velocities you are getting?

I too use the RCBS 165 SIL in my 308 ( Savage 1-10 twist,22 inch barrel) i get about 1875 fps with 28.5 gr I 4895 and just over 1700 with 16 gr 2400,both loads use about a grain of dacron filler.

Another vote for the RCBS 165 SIL. Pic in my avatar is that boolit sized .3105" with 17 grains of 2400 no dacron.

Another for the RCBS 165 SIL or the Lyman 311299.....either will do nicely for excellent accuracy in the 1750 - 1950 fps range. Use a good alloy and a good softer lube like the NRA 50/50 or Lars 2500+ and leading should not be a problem. I suggest a medium burning powder in that longer barrel; start at 26 gr H4895 with a 1/2 - 3/4 gr dacron filler and work up.

What is the Dacron Filler used for?

It keeps the powder position at the rear of the case for much better ignition and consistent burning. That translates into much better accuracy. It is used with certain powders giving less than 80% load density.

Suggest; http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?109280-The-proper-use-of-fillers for a lot of good information.

Dacron keeps the powder located against the flash hole. This aids in consistent ignition and helps prevent SEE syndrome. The faster powders don't need it, but I think it's a good idea with the slower stick powders.
