I traded in to a 788 in 30-30 yesterday - But - it needs a magazine. Old one is a bit boogered up. Anyone have any experience with the after market magazines - and which of these are of good quality and function? - Before I start throwing money around? Any other general info on the magazines (and function) for 788 in 30-30 would be greatly appreciated. Looks like Sportsmans and Numrich have them - But they may be from the same manufacturing source. Thanks in advance for your comments and information.

I will be following this post. Mine will be here in about a week, and I need a couple more mags.

Go to gunbroker and buy and original magazine and be happy that you only spent your money the one time. I am not sure who made them but the aftermarket 308 mags I had were just not the same quality. YMMV

Nothing much available on Gunbroker at the moment. One original that is used and a bit sketchy.

A magazine will only be about 50 bucks.

I cursed when I bought an extra 222 mag years ago or about a 1/3 of that.

Remington mag is cheap chintzy mag and it has a pitiful excuse for a follower.

I had looked ant many way ways to overcome the mag by building a mag with follower like most rifles and finally gave up out of laziness.

One day I will either make a permanent single shot adapter or will make my own magazine or decent follower. It is only plinker/pest control rifle anyway!

Actually, what I was looking for with my original post was a bit of commentary about quality of after market magazines verses factory remington magazines. Also whether magazines from one after market supplier might be better than those from another. Any other info about 788 30-30 magazines would be appreciated.

The ones Numrich had were identical to the Originals. Don't know if they still have any or not.

BTW, try that 788 with Lyman 31141 and about 19 gr of 4198. You'll like the results.

Thanks Yance. That's what I was looking for. Numrich and Sportsman's are all I can find at the moment - asside from the ones that show up on Gunbroker. Probably gonna go with Numrich unless somthing else shows up. I might spring for one Remington factory new if it appeared. 19 gr - 4198 - wriiten in the book
