I just took an order for 1K boolits.
I have ~ 50 in the box.

So, I fired up the melter and went to work.

Last time (about 2 weeks ago) I used this mold I got 99% good from it.

Today, I got 99% rejects.
Same alloy, same temps (mold is instrumented), same fluxing.
Every thing was the same. I even sat in the same chair ;-)

I couldn't pour a usable boolit to save my ****! [smilie=b:

don't feel too bad, i threw 5 lbs of 55 gr boolit back in the pot.
sat down for a little while and worked on some 8mm [checking and sizing them] and re-cast those same boolits into 95% keepers.
never touched the pot or the mold in between,i must have been holding my mouth a little differently the second time.

As I age, I find some days, it's best just to give up and do something else.
Sometimes, I can work magic, sometimes I cant sit in a chair without screwing up

 Alcohol & ANY aspect of guns, reloading, shooting etc are ABSOLUTELY incongruous in my book.

Yep, not literal, just a laugh.
I am eating a big pickle right now, might work too!

I think i had a good day. Casting 115 grn. for the 30 carb., cast for 1 1/2 hr. got 785 boolits and they all look like keepers. Not bad for 2 cavity mold.

Boy, am I glad I am not alone in having one of THOSE days - I had my schedule all cleared a few Sundays ago and planned to cast after church - soon as I get home, I fire up the pot, change into my casting clothes as quick as I can and get everything set out and proceeded to spend an hour in futility - and this was my easiest to use mold. After an hour I was so utterly frustrated I just had to stop - plan on doing some this weekend - I'm hoping to get mostly keepers and I'd be tickled pink to get a production rate anything approaching Mugs and his 785 in 1 1/2 hours - wow!

Ain't that right!

I just shut the pot off.
Yesterday I poured ~ 1500 (45#)

I gave up sorting them - I was only getting one keeper every 50 - 60. And that was only if I wasn't too critical!

Well I did the same 45# just now - pour all yesterdays failures back in.

I haven't gone through em yet - still hot.
But a good sampling looks like no fails at all.
Of course there will be a few - Every now and them I get impatient and move early, or I accidentally plug the next hole with over flow.

But it looks like 99% goods :-)

Only thing different today over yesterday is - cloudy today and 10º cooler, it was partly sunny yesterday.

Sometimes it's just best not to analyze things !!!

You forgot the eye of knute. You have to follow the recipe.

That's your problem right there - shoulda been shooting, not casting on a warmer, sunnier day :Fire:

As a new caster what is a reject in your eye's?

Voids, Wrinkles, Frost, Rounded Edges on the grooves/base, under or oversize (flashing), I'll reject a bad sprew cut too.
Basically ANYTHING other than perfect.
I sell the good ones, but I will often save the 'good' rejects ( maybe a little wrinkle on the nose or on one ring) to shoot myself as 'blasters'.

yep.
i'll toss back anything that just don't feel right or looks at me funny.
i'm pretty critical of my castings.

I would have thought that Knute Rockne's eyes would be worth a fortune!

There was a thread a year or so back that most casters had better results on cloudy overcast or rainy days. Yesterday when i cast the 785 boolits it was overcast and cool.

On overcast or light rainy days I am glad to get outside and cast some boolits. Cooler weather just goes with a hot casting pot. I think I have more patience on days like that.

Don't know what you got against Gingrich. He needs his eyes.

Mugs, you cast 8.72 boolits in one minute with a two cavity mold, and at a steady pace?.

Please tell me your secret:)

I find a chicken foot on a string around my neck helps a lot.
