View Full Version : Annealing wheelweight metal?

Ok, I think I understand the concept of hardening lead alloys, but what about annealing? How is it done? How soft can you get wheelweights? How long does it last? Can you really partially anneal a boolit to make a "softpoint"? I've heard all this mentioned, but cannot find details.

Simply air cooling the bullets as they drop from the mold is pretty much anealing, you could also do what is known as a "draw" to heat treated bullets by boiling them in water........and also you could spot anneal the noses by applying heat to them.

Air cooled is about as soft as they will get. Anything else you do will not amount to much, not enough to effect expansion to make the work worth the trouble. If you want them softer, add pure lead.
